“The Vision Was Mine” — says Nana Akua Addo “The couture development and technical artistic execution were ours,” says Almée Couture One of the most talked-about looks from the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA) has now sparked a heated debate about creativity, ownership and recognition in African fashion. German-born Ghanaian model, actress and film producer Nana Akua Addo has publicly challenged fashion house Almée Couture over claims surrounding her viral “Cathedral” outfit worn during the AMVCA cultural celebrations. The architectural gown quickly gained attention online for its cathedral-inspired structure, intricate detailing and bold couture presentation. But days after the event, the spotlight shifted from fashion admiration to controversy after Nana shared a lengthy statement on Instagram accusing the designer of taking credit for a concept she says originated from her. According to Nana, she approached Almée Couture with a fully developed vision and detailed references for the look. She claimed the fashion house initially declined to execute the outfit exactly as she imagined because the concept was too difficult and risky to produce. “I shared my idea with you and explained exactly how I wanted it,” she wrote. “You mentioned that you didn't want to execute it the way I envisioned because of how detailed my ideas were.” Nana further stated that after receiving a refund, she eventually had the outfit created elsewhere. However, Almée Couture has now issued its own public response, strongly rejecting suggestions that it falsely claimed ownership of the gown's creative development. “Transforming a general concept into a complete couture design through original sketching, silhouette development, structural interpretation, and artistic execution is the work of the designer and atelier behind the piece,” the statement read. Almée Couture also claimed that after the project was canceled and refunded, it was “mutually acknowledged” that the fashion house retained ownership rights over the sketches and developed couture interpretation created during the collaboration. What are your genuine thoughts about this?
