By popular request (i.e. 1 follower) a book by Clive Wismayer I thought nothing of it when the bat sneezed in my face. Little did I know this innocuous event would lead to the collapse of western governments, revolution in the US, China’s peaceful & friendly acquisition of ..

@Steve1898505 I agree Steve. Marco has been excellent. It’s probably time for him to go, before he loses his zest, but the fans should be grateful. Trouble is, too many have wildly unrealistic expectations of a thin squad which has over-performed on his watch.

@CliveWismayer @SarahLudford Well, I liked it. I drove for Arriva for a while, back in 2000. Just as RMs were being phased out. It was indeed having to deal with passengers that ruined the job, as the company brought in more One Person Operated (OPOs) vehicles

Concerning Cole Palmer’s omission. Before the 2014 world cup I expected Brian Ruiz of Costa Rica to shine. I’d watched him fail as a premier league player at Fulham, bullied & swallowed up by players like Tom Cleverly. But international tournament football is a whole different ball game. Costa Rica, topped a group containing 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇮🇹 & 🇺🇾 (all world cup winners) with Ruiz starring. Their last game, a 0-0 draw with England, was a damp squib as England were already out & Costa Rica were already through. Cole Palmer is like Brian Ruiz.

Can someone explain this? If Spurs draw tomorrow and West Ham win, they’ll finish on the same points. Since both won one H2H game each, who stays in the Premier League then?

@IanWessels2 @EchoesofEmpire_ Haven’t read that. Probably should. The film’s focus seems to be on British arrogance, a perfectly sound angle, but Zulu ingenuity is left out. Also the score isn’t a patch on Zulu.

@IanWessels2 @EchoesofEmpire_ It was not just courage (flimsy shields, clubs & spears against rifles & artillery) but strategy. The Zulus managed to manoeuvre an army of 20,000 to within striking distance unseen & then exploit two British mistakes: separation of the column & failure to entrench the base camp.

@RFenell I don’t accept this stricture. I do not have to study Islam to know the vast majority of people, of all faiths & none, are nice at bottom & want nothing more than to get on with life.

In that case, Clive, it might be better to steer of comments about how Muslims typically behave? At any rate, those of them who take the diktats of their religion seriously? The basic drift of these includes: lie low and pretend civility until you have superiority. Then kill all infidels who resist. Mohamed was, after all, a dark-ages war lord. Killing his enemies was a key part of his modus operandi.

@CliveWismayer My brother has lived in beautiful Haarlem for nigh on 30 years now with his Dutch partner, he loves it and is appalled at the state of the UK when he visits. He's a very patriotic Brit who would never live here again 🤔

I’ve been in 🇳🇱 6 years & a frequent visitor for 17 before that. I agree with Ekaterina & add: • great schools • great sports facilities, all well organised • great healthcare (unfortunately, I’m an expert) • in general, things work • cities set up for cycling • great cultural heritage • multi-lingual population • prosperity • a healthy democracy & the rule of law • affordable & good quality public transport • easy access to neighbouring countries I can think of only 2 things I miss about the UK - better gardens & parks & more varied & beautiful landscape.

A few thoughts on the Netherlands 🇳🇱   After several years living here, I want to say it clearly: I really like this country.   The Dutch have a special kind of quiet decency — direct, practical, and often kinder than they give themselves credit for. I appreciate the freedom, the safety, the respect for personal space, and the way life feels organized without being oppressive.   This environment has also given me space to breathe and continue my journey with mental health — to manage my psychoses better and build a meaningful life.   I love the beautiful light on the canals, the bike culture (even if I still complain about the rain), and the simple pleasure of Friday mornings at the market. Most of all, I’m grateful for the good people I’ve met — normal, warm, down-to-earth people who value real life.   It’s not perfect, of course. No country is. But this place has given me space to grow, to heal in my own way, and to create. And for that, I’m truly thankful.
