@mrjamesob The problem# is that people like Birchill don’t believe 1/2 of what they write. They mustfeed the outrage machine to justify attention they crave and fees they receive. They inevitably overstep the mark. Their outrage columns substitute for analysis. They hide their mediocrity.

What Gavin Williamson doesn’t understand in spending a meagre £50 per pupil to ‘catch up’ is that it’s not just a question of equity, it’s an investment in an economy which has a skill and productivity deficit. Utter lack of foresight and understanding.

‘the BBC (should) be taking every possible step to make sure nothing like this ever happens again," - Boris Johnson. I can take moralistic platitudes from many people ....but from the new doyen of behavioural standards Boris Johnson? not really.

Labour won all but 2 of 10? Mayoralty elections, so what is the Conservative response, reminiscent of Trump’s dodgy republicans; if you can’t win the game, change the rules. theguardian.com/politics/2021/…

@SuperVallo Yes. Agree. They have some decent policy in the offing but been far too slow to wheel out. Too cautious.

@SuperVallo Some good basic analysis in this of the problem, but fails to even broach the solution. Spot on about levelling up. There is no way the policies or money announced are going to make but a pin prick’s difference to the problem, especially not Freeports which have a failed history.

If our Prime Minister is up for sale, at least he should abide by the rules and be put out to tender to get the best price.

“This is the most distrustful, awful environment I’ve ever worked in, in government. Almost nobody tells the truth is what I’ve learnt over the last 36 hours.” Johnny Mercer, ex-Conservative Minister, who resigned yesterday. Question is, why did it take him so long to realise

@andythelodge That is my very fear. There will be lots of huff and puff whatever they come up with will have so many loopholes in it it will be toothless. What disappoints me most is the collusion and subservience of the civil service.

Reading also Sunday Times today, it is clear a number of posh Tory boys think that not only is the state an extension of the Tory party, but that, especially the NHS, is a cow to be milked solely for their own and for their chums’ benefit. theguardian.com/politics/2021/…

‘Welsh PPE procurement praised despite pandemic challenges | Public Finance.’ The English procurement was chaos and involved enormous amount of cronyism. This shows it did not have to be like this. publicfinance.co.uk/news/2021/04/w…

Is this the same Eric Pickles who, when he was a minister, abolished the Audit Commission with all its oversight powers and replaced it with fairly toothless private accountancy firms? bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…
