FAQ - Twitter ad revenue sharing and Subscriptions
We’ve been getting a lot of questions about the upcoming rollout of Ad Revenue share, so here’s a guide with the key info about the program. Note this is all based on currently confirmed info - if anything changes we’ll make sure to update it in the replies.
How do you become eligible for ad revenue share?
You need to:
-Be subscribed to Twitter Blue verification (aka the “blue checkmark”)
-Accumulate a total of 15 million views on your tweets across a period of 3 months (this requirement has just been changed from the prior requirement of 5 million impressions per month for 3 months)
The minimum payout will be $50.
When will ad revenue share launch for all eligible users?
Based on recent leaks and info from the Twitter team, it’s expected to launch in the next few days or weeks as of now (July 22nd).
What is the difference between Ad revenue share and Subscriptions?
These are the two creator monetization programs Twitter currently offers to users.
Ad revenue share pays out a portion of ad revenue from ads shown in the replies to users’ tweets.
Subscriptions allows users to post Subscriber-only tweets that can only be seen by people paying a subscription fee to that account.
Will you need to be approved for creator Subscriptions to receive ad revenue payouts?
No. The two creator monetization programs aren’t linked. You can be getting payouts from one and not the other.
Why are Subscriptions taking so long to get approved for some users?
There was a huge influx of applications when the Subscription program relaunched in April and the threshold was reduced to just 500 users.
Also, the Subscriptions approval process is much more complicated for the team since it requires approval with each app store.
The team continue to work through the backlog of approvals.
What will users need to do to receive their ad revenue payout?
When the program goes live for everyone eligible, users can go to the Monetization page in the Twitter settings and confirm their payment method (Stripe). After this the payments will be automatic each month as long as you meet the requirements.
What if I can’t access Stripe?
Stripe is the only payment method Twitter offers at the moment, meaning that monetization and payouts will not initially be available in some countries. Hopefully Twitter can offer more methods in future.
Will payouts be backdated to February, when the program was announced?
Yes, as long as you have been subscribed to Blue since February.
Will users who sign up to Blue now get backpay through to February?
No. You only get ad revenue share for the months you signed up for Blue. However, users who sign up now can get ad revenue share going forward for new tweets and views.
How are ad revenue share payouts calculated?
The payouts are not directly based on how many views (impressions) a tweet gets. Instead, the revenue share calculation is done on how many ads are seen by Verified (Twitter Blue) users in the replies. This means that users and tweets that generate a lot of replies, and have a higher ratio of Verified users viewing their tweets and reply sections.
Note that the program will soon expand to share revenue from ads shown on user profiles. This is expected to approximately double payouts from their current levels.
Why do only Verified/Blue user views count for the revenue share?
Elon has argued that without having this measure in place, it would be too easy to game the system by using a bot army to give yourself a high amount of views on your tweets.
That’s everything we can think of for now, if you guys have any more questions please leave a reply and it will be addressed in a followup reply.
