There are two types of developers: those who love the code and those who love the product. For the "code artist," AI is a struggle because it skips the craft and the elegance. For the "builder," AI is a godsend, it’s just a faster way to ship something that works. One seeks the perfect line; the other seeks the final result.

I've never felt this much behind as a programmer. The profession is being dramatically refactored as the bits contributed by the programmer are increasingly sparse and between. I have a sense that I could be 10X more powerful if I just properly string together what has become available over the last ~year and a failure to claim the boost feels decidedly like skill issue. There's a new programmable layer of abstraction to master (in addition to the usual layers below) involving agents, subagents, their prompts, contexts, memory, modes, permissions, tools, plugins, skills, hooks, MCP, LSP, slash commands, workflows, IDE integrations, and a need to build an all-encompassing mental model for strengths and pitfalls of fundamentally stochastic, fallible, unintelligible and changing entities suddenly intermingled with what used to be good old fashioned engineering. Clearly some powerful alien tool was handed around except it comes with no manual and everyone has to figure out how to hold it and operate it, while the resulting magnitude 9 earthquake is rocking the profession. Roll up your sleeves to not fall behind.

@karpathy There are so many different things to do or try that all claim to be better than one another. The tools are actually competing with each other. Developers just have a ticket the show. They just don't know who to cheer for.

@MaarNu @testingcatalog I started to install it and decided to wait concerned about the level of access it gives.

I have some concerns about what it can access in the browser through SSO and with Bitwarden access. So I'm somewhat hesitant to install it although the benefit of troubleshooting the frontend would be great. If you are reading those disclaimers when installing it... I thought maybe use a totally different browser or profile... Thoughts?

@BekahHW Recently discovered plan mode after thinking out loud with my keyboard and having to revert unintended changes. I also taking a step back to manually defining on paper as part of my planning experience

It's wild how easy it is to let dopamine drive our decisions (jumping into code v. planning first). With AI, it's easy to code without understanding, but that leads to downstream challenges. I've been using Plan Mode to help stay in System 2 thinking before jumping in.
