@MoorallaMerino @james_ag_ Yep good one Rick. Another reason is the labour efficiency also. I think we all should do a proper measurement in regards to the time we save not feeding mobs all over the joint compared to having them in 1 spot.

@LambproHolbrook No shortage of backpackers looking for farm work now, in my experience they love working with sheep, some are better than others but there is always a job that fits their skill level, adds a good energy to the workforce too.

Beef and cropping seem to have labour sorted better than sheep systems. Beef has the north (generating numbers of competent stock people) and cropping seems to have more interest in tech machinery. What’s the answer for the sheep industry to fix on farm labour ? Thoughts ?

@LambproHolbrook Infrastructure, make it a place people want to work at or on. Also buys you efficiency, good undercover yards, lamb marking trailer, crutching trailer, good tech has helped us find and retain labour.

@RichieKirkland2 I agree Richie, had a truck pick up heifers which were going straight to Tassie, the Truckie had to get rid of all the branches. Is a high risk for carting insects etc around the country.

Local councils need to trim roadside trees otherwise it’s creating a safety hazard for other road users and not good to see a 1/2 a million dollar stock crate used for the trimming job🤬🤬 #dontlookup

@kelly_gorter @EmCharlotteAnn That’s exactly what I want to avoid and what I used to do, but marking is busy and that method is not fool proof. This different tag system means visual drafting is also possible. I’m talking commercial operation 10k + lambs

@Cuyuac @EmCharlotteAnn Andrew why not just create a trait of “class” in your xr5000 and allocate each animal the category of terminal/ breeder/ sale? When marking lambs, note the start and end tag No. and upload that into a bucket file. Then if a breeder ever becomes a sale ewe it can be updated.

For those of you already on the EID bandwagon, in a commercial flock setting, what kind of economic and management benefits are you seeing? How do you utilise them? What don’t you bother with?

@mbomb0507 @EmCharlotteAnn EID tag is the only tag they get at marking (all the same year colour), the different brands are quite visually different too, so can easily draft manually as well

@Cuyuac @EmCharlotteAnn That’s interesting, Andrew, do you tag like that at marking ie tags are same colour but different brands or are they additional management tags?

@EmCharlotteAnn You could do away with the visual tags too, as the different brand tags are visually different as well

@Cuyuac That’s interesting, I do that with visual tags for my 1. Wool 2. Multipurpose 3. Progeny of multipurpose. Would one tag and csv files take more time/be inefficient?

@EmCharlotteAnn It just means it’s easy at marking, different brand tags in the different categories, then easy to find and upload, as the different makes of tags have a different code on there nils id

@EmCharlotteAnn Anytime they are weighed or go through auto drafter, it picks up the 3 different categories automatically. I find lambs have a habit of getting in the wrong mobs so pretty handy I think. No extra cost and quite a time saver

@EmCharlotteAnn I’ve used for 7 years. I buy 3 different brands of tags, brand a. Terminal b. Breeder ewe c. Sale ewe. Then it is easy to find the different brands of tags on NLIS database, upload into xr5000 as lifetime info and the 3 category’s are auto drafted, when weighing. Saves a draft

@RichieKirkland2 @RavenLimousin My bearers are near the joins, but not right on, very ridged as Richie says. Shit through easy. Sheets are 3.6x1.2m so quite heavy. But quick to lay

@RavenLimousin @Cuyuac I reckon I’ll just add another bearer to fit on the join. The sheets seem pretty ridged and I don’t reckon they will flex even if not supported on the edges
