First weekend without thinking about ICAN. How are you feeling 🫠

PERSONALLY, I find this conversation around religion and feminism very interesting, especially the school of thought that believes that it is impossible to be a feminist and still be a Christian or Muslim because both religions are patriarchal. You hear things like: “Muslim feminists and Christian feminists really hate themselves o. These religions are patriarchal, what are you still doing there?” PERSONALLY, I can never believe that many of the things written in our religious books about women being beneath men came directly from God. I have discovered God for myself in very personal ways, and a lot of these beliefs about women existing to submit, shrink themselves, endure oppression quietly, or see men as naturally superior simply do not align with the version of God I have encountered in my own life. I cannot believe that God created women to be lesser human beings. I will never agree with that. And this is why many of us need to question religious doctrines and interpretations because men absolutely shaped many of these systems. Human beings wrote, interpreted, translated, preserved, taught, and institutionalized religion over centuries. Men were the key participants in that process. Of course, the religion will totally favour them. Before nko? But I can never accept that this is how it should be. I personally choose the parts of religion that align with love, justice, compassion, dignity, peace, and humanity, because those things make sense to me spiritually. Any belief system that depends on the subjugation of women immediately loses credibility in my eyes. The idea that women cannot practise religion at all and still be feminists because religion is patriarchal is interesting to me because society itself is patriarchal, workplaces are patriarchal, politics is patriarchal, marriage systems are patriarchal. Entire cultures are patriarchal. We did not respond to that by abandoning society completely. We started questioning systems, pushing boundaries, demanding change, and challenging harmful norms. So why should religion suddenly become the one space feminists are not allowed to question/ participate in and why do you people try to troll women who practise religion? Why are we being asked to just stop practising? Some will even tell you, “you are a joker if you say you are a Muslim feminist or Christian feminist because these religions oppress women.” PERSONALLY, I love praying, I love worship, I love spirituality. I have experienced faith in ways that carried me through some of the darkest moments of my life. I’m not going to disconnect from that because oppressive patriarchal structures exist within the religion. If anything, I have more reasons to question, challenge, reinterpret, and reclaim space within it. Men are not the sole guardians of spirituality. They are not the exclusive translators of God. I do not believe in many of the human interpretations and expressions of religion but I believe in God, prayers, and faith. My personal belief is that the same God that asked us to ask questions, seek answers and challenge wrongdoings and oppression, no matter how small, cannot be in support of the things we human beings have turned religion into. You can even call it selective relationship with religion but I will pick and choose the parts of the religion that align with the God I have come to know for myself. Many things have changed for the better in these religious spaces because women have continued to take up space and question belief systems. It is valid if you become irreligious just because you cannot stand how religious spaces can be to women. It is very valid. But saying that women should just stop going to church or going to mosque or praying to God is not the solution you think it is. If anything, we need more feminists in religious spaces.
