KAMPALA ROADMAP!,

Did you know that communities including the Borana and Somali have valid claims regarding the origin of the name “Wajir,” which means “togetherness” or “convergence”? Indigenous communities established Wajir as a key caravan route owing to its complex water wells and linking Moyale in Marsabit and southern Ethiopia to Kismayu in Somalia. In 1912, the Imperial British East Africa Company made Wajir an administrative centre otherwise known as a “Boma”. After Kenya’s 🇰🇪 independence in 1963, Wajir became part of the North Eastern Province and with the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya in 2010, Wajir was officially recognized as a distinct County. This year, Wajir proudly hosts the National Madaraka Day Celebrations, the first time such celebrations are being held in the North Eastern Region and since Wajir’s establishment.
