@MoreOurselves @ArchTesta @JurajMikurcik @AndrewMichler @AR_Clarke I've just had to replace the bearings in the ebmpapst fans in my Paul Novus unit after 6 years. Same style of 2Z / ZZ bearings with metal 'shields' rather than rubber seals; I decided to use replacements with seals - a bit more friction but better for stopping moisture ingress.

@ArchTesta @JurajMikurcik @AndrewMichler @AR_Clarke My MVHR fans in 2010 Paul prototype unit still running quietly. Such equipment must be built to last 2b accepted. certainly don’t regret fitting MVHR, v good decision, great air quality+ other benefits, but want it 2 last & perform robustly, & parts to be available/repairable

@stevieby @sarah_go_green Yep; like Steve said, for a Router a more conventional Uninterruptible Power Supply would probably be the better way to go. The Ecoflow looks like it emphasises the portability aspect - and it's a lot of money! upscentre.co.uk has lots of options

@sarah_go_green why not buy a UPS? Router will not use much power I imagine so you would be able to get several hours from it.

I am going to get battery storage later this year. Hopefully when i get solar. BUT anyone got any views on this eco flow? My main issue is the router. We have so many items connected to it i would prefer it doesn’t ho down during a power cut. uk.ecoflow.com/products/river…

But the penalty for being wrong is near zero. You can migrate to a different instance and drag all your followers along with you. This is maybe the single coolest feature of Mastodon; lock-in is engineered out. The Masto community needs to do better at getting this message across

The absolutely worst part of the onboarding is when you are asked to pick a server, when you still don't have any idea what the consequences of that decision are Start with a server that your friends are on already and that's still open to signups You can move elsewhere later

Of all of the reasons for why we should keep burning stuff for heat in buildings, I find 'because we don't need to worry about building energy efficiency measures' the most disconcerting and cynical (1/4).

Energy efficiency in the UK is now more sought after than traditional home features like a garden or off-street parking. Research from @santanderuk found buyers pay almost 10% more for homes that have been retrofitted with energy efficiency upgrades. santander.co.uk/about-santande…

@mwt2008 If you happen to find a dead bird of prey, it’s a good idea to see whether there’s an organisation interested in doing tests on the body to check for a build-up of chemicals. In the UK try pbms.ceh.ac.uk

How birds of prey are exposing a toxic time bomb "There are around 350,000 substances marketed worldwide & around 100,000 of these are marketed in the EU. Of these, only about 500 are well-characterised for their hazards and exposure." #health theguardian.com/environment/20…

So, test drive completed and full deposit paid. What an amazing car for the money. Ordered the Trophy as the spec difference is substantial. Companies shouldn't make an EV with a rear charge port and no reversing camera. #mg4

@Neal_UK @sarah_go_green @OctopusEnergy Good point Neal; thanks. I didn't spot the Ohme listed in the Intelligent Octopus FAQs but now I see it's mentioned on the main page. I have a different smart-ish charger already.

If you are in the fence about switching from @OctopusEnergy Go to Intelligent tariff take a look at this. I obviously had the general idea before signing up but this really focuses the mind on why the intelligent tariff is important. It’s the future! octopus.energy/blog/intellige…

Anyone know off hand, whether the BMW MINI Cooper S (JCW) from 2015 did its tyre pressure monitoring atmospherically or by rotational velocity comparison? Is each valve sporting a mini barometer inside the tyre?

@jesseb4me I have a 200 litre cylinder and while it's well insulated it still loses 5 degrees in 12 hours (58 -> 53) - and makes the plant room hot. One benefit of a Sunamp is that there's much less heat loss so it's better at preserving hot water from one day to the next; good for low use.

Then space - I don’t have a huge amount of cupboard space, but can fit a slimline cylinder. I know this is personal preference, but is the £1200+ premium for a sunamp worth it over a normal cylinder 🤷‍♂️

Given how happy I am with my air-to-air system, I’m looking to sort my hot water in the coming month or so and disconnect from gas entirely. But a few things I’m pondering - 1/x

#Passivhaus Twitter. I’ve no direct experience of seeing masonry Passivhauses built (cavity wall). How do you keep the mineral wool insulation dry while it’s being built?

@EsTresidder My nearly-Passivhaus had its 250mm cavity filled with EPS beads once the cavity was sealed which neatly by-passed this issue.

Got to thinking about this after having to redo almost all the insulation in our retrofit when it got wet.

@Gill_Nowell @OctopusEnergy I get that sometimes too; looks like it's a bug in the app. Normally if you refresh the "My Energy" page and re-view the Tariff both rates show up.

Random energy Twitter question… We've been away so I can see our baseline electricity usage is 2kWh/day I reckon the fridge + freezer combined ought to be only about half that Router shouldn't be much… Only other thing I can think of is MVHR – could that be 1kWh/day?

@DrSimEvans @NigelBanks_ilke @DiddlySquat51 I wasn't sure what consumption to expect from my MVHR so had it installed with a dedicated electricity meter (a small DIN-rail mount one in the consumer unit). My MVHR system, a PAUL Novus 450, is consistently using 1kWh per day on the '1' (Low) setting.
