Yesterday I spoke on @PatrickChristys show about a deeply concerning issue: the imbalance in how our system treats perpetrators versus victims. In many cases, individuals accused or convicted of serious offences are granted extensive legal aid, while victims are left fighting for years just to access compensation or basic support. Too often, they face barrier after barrier, which can leave them feeling overlooked and undervalued all over again. And it doesn’t stop there. Our system places a strong emphasis on rehabilitation and ensuring the needs of offenders are met including access to education, healthcare, therapy and structured support while in custody. Meanwhile, victims are frequently left to cope with long-term trauma, long waiting lists for therapy, and an exhausting battle for recognition and help. This contrast raises difficult but necessary questions about priorities. Victims who did nothing wrong can end up carrying lifelong consequences with far less support than they need or deserve. If we’re serious about justice, the focus must shift. Supporting victims shouldn’t be an afterthought, it should be central to the system. Because without that, we risk sending the message that those who suffer harm matter less than those who cause it. The issue of legal aid is complex as everyone should be entitled to a fair trial and legal representation, but there are practical ways it could be addressed more fairly. • If someone is found guilty, there should be a system in place for them to repay the cost of their legal aid over time once they are earning after release. • There also needs to be a broader conversation about accountability in cases involving foreign nationals, particularly where serious offences are committed shortly after arrival. • And more widely, prison should strike a better balance between rehabilitation and accountability. That could include structured work programmes where offenders contribute to society and, where appropriate, repay costs through meaningful labour. At the moment, many people feel the system doesn’t do enough to hold offenders accountable in a way that’s visible or meaningful, especially when compared to the struggles victims face in accessing support. Justice should mean accountability, fairness, and a system that clearly prioritises those who have been harmed, not one that leaves them feeling overlooked.

This amazing video was made by @JenniferSey during the Paris Olympics. The one where a man entered women’s boxing and took gold. The athletes were begging for help. No one could see them bc Meta censored the hashtag! Can we get it going now? #XX
