In the arrest warrant request submitted to prosecutors on the 14th, police stated, “Without properly verifying the facts, the suspect repeatedly claimed through YouTube broadcasts and press conferences that the complainant (Kim Soohyun) had dated and engaged in sexual relations with the deceased (Kim Saeron) while she was a minor, and that pressure from the complainant’s side over debt repayment caused the deceased’s death.” Police further stated, “After receiving screenshots of KakaoTalk conversations between the deceased and a person labeled ‘Unknown’ from the bereaved family, the suspect inserted the complainant’s photo into the KakaoTalk profile section of ‘Unknown’ and changed the conversation partner’s name from ‘Unknown’ to the complainant, making it appear as though the chats were actual conversations between the complainant and the deceased.” They continued, “Despite clearly knowing that the identity of the person the deceased had been conversing with was unconfirmed, the suspect posted manipulated KakaoTalk materials to make them appear to be real conversations with the complainant. Furthermore, during a press conference, he played a voice file of the deceased allegedly manipulated using AI while asserting false claims that ‘the deceased first had sexual relations with the complainant during the winter break of her second year of middle school’ and that ‘the complainant’s side attempted to persuade the informant who provided the recording file by offering 4 billion won in exchange for the file.’” In addition, police stated, “The suspect broadcast multiple photos and recordings related to the complainant, including a photo taken on a mobile phone showing the complainant washing dishes at the deceased’s residence, and psychologically pressured the complainant by saying that additional private materials would be disclosed unless he apologized to the bereaved family or stated his position.” Police added that “there are substantial reasons to suspect the suspect committed offenses involving false statements, defamation, and violations of the Information and Communications Network Act (defamation).” Police also pointed out, “If the suspect, who is already facing multiple investigations and trials, is additionally indicted in this case, he is likely fully aware of the weight of the criminal liability he would bear,” adding, “There is a significant possibility that he may act insincerely in criminal proceedings or attempt to flee in order to avoid legal and financial disadvantages.” Police further expressed concern, saying, “The suspect is also participating in political rallies and demonstrations, and is likely under considerable pressure due to the various economic and social issues surrounding the matters he is involved in. If he is indicted and brought to trial in this case, his psychological support system could collapse.” They added, “Considering there was a previous case in which the late journalist Kim Yongho, who had long hosted Garosero Research Institute broadcasts together with the suspect, made an extreme choice four days before his pre-arrest suspect interrogation in another case, the possibility that the suspect could likewise destroy evidence through an extreme choice cannot be ruled out,” arguing that “there is a considerable need to secure the suspect in custody.” In addition, police mentioned that the deceased’s father had refused to submit the mobile phone the deceased had been using before her death, despite requests from investigators, stating, “As long as the suspects continue to have access to the related materials, there is a very high possibility that evidence could be destroyed, manipulated, or damaged.” Regarding this, Kim Seui said in a phone interview with this publication, “Looking at the grounds for detention presented by police, they claim that key materials such as the so-called ‘Kali Park’ recording file may have been false or manipulated, yet I disclosed them without sufficient verification.” He continued, “However, it was reported in the media late last year that the National Forensic Service informed the Seoul Gangnam Police Station that it could not determine whether the recording file had been manipulated using AI. The National Forensic Service concluded that it was ‘impossible to determine,’ yet police definitively labeled the file as ‘AI-manipulated.’ That does not make sense.” Kim also stated, “Police additionally cited the risk of reoffending, claiming that I appeared to have conducted provocative defamatory broadcasts against the couple Hong Seobeom and Jo Gapgyeong without sufficiently confirming the facts,” adding, “The Hong Seobeom–Jo Gapgyeong issue was not fake news but factual.
