I also struggled with the idea of “two gods” or dualism initially. Gnosticism directly challenges the premise that "there is only one God" by positing a fundamental dualism in the divine realm. Gnosticism addresses the challenge of "there is only one God" by rejecting strict monotheism in favor of a hierarchical dualism. The ultimate reality is the ineffable, transcendent Monad, the true Father of Light, pure spirit, beyond all creation and unknowable through ordinary means. This highest God is not the creator of the flawed material world, but is the gracious God of the New Testament. The Demiurge is a flawed, ignorant, arrogant lesser being who mistakenly believes himself to be the only god ("I am God and there is no other"). In the Apocryphon of John from the Nag Hammadi Library, Yaldabaoth declares, “I am God and there is no other god beside me,” echoing but distorting Isaiah 45:5 while revealing his ignorance of the higher realm from which his power derives. It still fits the mold of Christianity, simply imaging the "devil" or "Demiurge" as a lesser or false God. He fashioned the imperfect material world as a prison for divine sparks (souls) trapped in bodies of flesh. His realm is one of illusion, suffering, law, and worldly power. As someone who was born and raised as a Christian, I would argue that I do have an "open mind" and didn’t set out to challenge my beliefs, but what I found challenged my beliefs. Why is it closed minded to study gnostic Christian texts that were otherwise unavailable for 2000 years? Why did the church go through so much trouble to see that these texts were destroyed and gnostic Christians persecuted for their beliefs? Gnosticism has a big picture view that orthodox Christianity is missing, in my opinion. I wish more people would read for themselves. I am not asking anyone to change their faith or beliefs, that is for you to decide. To the question “There is only one God; hence, they are the same God. The Old Testament God frequently displays jealousy (“I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,” Exodus 20:5), wrath, and regret (Genesis 6:6), demanding law, sacrifice, and obedience in the material realm. In contrast, the New Testament emphasizes a God of unconditional love and forgiveness (“God is love,” 1 John 4:8; “Father, forgive them,” Luke 23:34). These are not evolving aspects of the same deity but signatures of two distinct realities: the lesser Demiurge ruling the physical order versus the true transcendent Father. Gnostic scriptures, uncovered in the Nag Hammadi Library, emphasize that salvation is not through ritual, law, or faith in the creator, but through awakening to one's divine origin beyond the material illusion. In the Apocryphon of John and related post-resurrection dialogues, Jesus appears to his disciples (including extended teachings to John) not to reinforce the old law but to reveal hidden mysteries of the higher realms, the divine spark, and escape from the Archons and Demiurge’s trap. What is the right amount of faith? Is it going to mass daily? Is it going twice a year on Easter and Christmas? Is it singing loudly in a choir on Sunday morning? Is it participating in faith formations or Saturday morning bible study? Are these the secret conversations Jesus had with his disciples and others when he resurrected and walked the Earth for 40 days? Gnostic texts suggest the true post-resurrection teachings were esoteric gnosis—inner knowledge of one’s origin in the Pleroma—rather than external rituals that bind one further to the material creator’s system.

The Old Testament God is Israel's God — jealous, wrathful, commanding floods, genocides, and blood sacrifices. The New Testament reveals a completely different God: love, forgiveness, grace.
