INCWALA: 🚨
We are coming from a time when INCWALA was viewed with extreme suspicion & sheer horror by a sizable population of eMaswati. I believe this was mainly driven by Western religious influence & the anti monarchy advocates.
Truth is, there has been a shift emaSwatini towards an embrace of not just the celebrations but Incwala’s significance in our society. I wish we had researchers to find out what motivated this shift or awakening.
This embrace of our roots which are centuries in the making is phenomenal.
One of the rules is “incwala ayibukelwa” An attempt to translate means “you cannot watch Incwala but must be part of it”. That is, you may only experience it by being part of it. You must be part of it because one of its major roles is fostering unity.
A record of an outsiders’ view way back in 1931 affords an “above the surface” idea of what incwala is.
The mysteries surrounding it are countless. The best way also preserve timeless mysteries and traditions is to create myths and oh boy, they are many!
For Eswatini, it’s “back to the future”. Our past is a victorious one and when our roots reach there, then our future is secured. And it’s about time! Align! 🇸🇿
