The right ventricular free wall is fully collapsing and slow to recoil, which @dr_larryi has termed the "Air Dancer Sign." This is a subjective finding in tamponade and one that should worry you whenever it is seen. For most clinicians, these two signs are the most useful for evaluating a patient for potential tamponade. For more advanced evaluation, we can also measure the velocity of blood entering the left and right ventricles during inspiration and expiration. To learn how to perform mitral and tricuspid inflow velocity evaluation and how to evaluate tamponade with pocus, get a copy of The POCUS Textbook in Kindle or Hardcover today! buff.ly/FRxqVaK

DVTs are more common in January and December, and have the lowest incidence in July. @RogerSeheult is this sunlight related too!? #meded #MedTwitter

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and potential resulting pulmonary embolus (PE) are a common reason for presentation to the hospital, especially in the winter. DVTs can be diagnosed with #pocus at the bedside. Interestingly enough, blood clots peak in January and February and have their lowest incidence in the summer. This was seen in multiple patient populations. A Korean study of 59,000 DVT or PEs found that they peaked in January and February and had their lowest incidence in the summer months. This was true across ages, sexes, and in patients with or without cancer. Is this sunlight related @RogerSeheult ? #foamed #meded #medtwitter @nephrop @IM_Crit_

One definite barrier is the lack of formal training. Most clinicians graduate without even touching an ultrasound probe, much less knowing how to use it. This is why we created POCUSMedEd and why @dr_larryi wrote The POCUS Textbook, to serve as a step-by-step guide for everyone to learn #pocus. I once diagnosed tuberculosis with nothing but a wooden tube and a prayer. @dr_larryi You have Doppler color maps and still miss pneumonia. Truly, the future is bright—and deaf. #foamed #meded #medtwitter

The POCUS Textbook is out for Kindle. Hardcover version is coming in a week or two! We are living in the nonfiction era that Star Trek envisioned was the science fiction version of the future. Let's act like it and use this advanced technology instead of our stethoscopes.

The jugular venous pressure (JVP) exam is one of the most iconic physical examination techniques that all clinicians learn in training. It requires the visual inspection of the neck veins to find the highest venous collapse point. This is then added to the distance from the sternum down to the right atrium, assumed to be 5 centimeters (what we call the right atrial depth). But of course, a 400-pound man may have a very different right atrial depth than a 100-pound woman. So how can we account for this in our physical examination? The short answer is we can't.
