A lot of the discourse focuses on whether or not patients die from.the initial infection, but it's becoming clearer that for a significant proportion of patients things get worse some time after the virus is gone. Long-lasting consequences which can be fatal. 3/4

I've now been seriously ill with #LongCovid for 11 months. I was never hospitalized. I didn't even have a "mild" covid case. Instead, I developed Long Covid from an asymptomatic infection. I'm far from unique. Up to 1/5 of asymptomatic patients go on to have long-term symptoms

@DrShaneRRR I sent five kids home sick today from the school I work at. I know others did as well. One of which said she'd been sick for three days already, but Mum sent her anyway. She went home and tested. Positive. Exposed 24 other kids and multiple teachers over the last two days. 🤦

Went to a rehab pool/gym today with a family member. Wearing 94 masks we entered the building. The young very polite receptionist looked at my mask and said "you don't need to wear those in here". I replied, "We are fine thanks". Now I wish I had a more witty reply? Ideas?

I desperately hope I am wrong on schools. I really hope term 4 was an anomaly and won't be repeated in any way despite Omicron. I hope I get to say I was wrong in a month.

Why I want to be wrong on Schools. It will mean: 1. Teachers won't be infected any more than they would otherwise be 2. There will be few disruptions, important for many kids that crave stability. 3. Parents will remain at work - no random disruptions

I’m a hell of a lot more angry that the leading preventable cause of death, disability and injury in women aged 18-45 in Australia is male violence rather than a woman not smiling at the PM today.

The only way we can prepare for variants is to purify the air we breathe through improved ventilation rates in indoor spaces and HEPA filters in indoor spaces and on people’s faces (N95 masks for all). Those measures work IMMEDIATELY against ALL VARIANTS. Vaccines alone: too slow

@sallyrugg Yes that’s the irony! That their outrage is the EXACT point Grace has highlighted- that toxic male privilege is dangerous to the wellbeing of women & children. #GraceTameIsUs

It kinda bothers me that the discussion is about “kids mental health”. There is a world of difference between an 8 yo and a 17 yo in terms of what they need for good MH. Young adults need to see friends, go to uni, have a job. Little kids needs their caregivers feeling safe

A special note regarding children as the 🦠 supposedly does no harm. Ignoring kids who get sick or die, who lose a parent, or frantically try to protect loved ones, really causes harm. My kids were not hurt by mitigation rules, they were hurt by seeing a very sick mom 11/

My clinical job is to treat children with respiratory infectious problems. I love it and I would like to help many more still. But to do so, society needs to support me and protect me. We need inclusive public health strategies, ensuring a safe society for all. 7/

Why have I had live interview requests from all over the world but nothing local media? I've seen far more comprehensive coverage of our story internationally than in Australia.

@VictorianCHO From a heartbroken & tired Victorian HCW who listens to your every word .. all would be fine if our hospitals weren’t in dire straits & people weren’t dying or suffering long-term morbidity 😞 is the hope that very high 3rd dose coverage will make it all better? I hope so 🙏🏼

@georgiedent @DrDayaSharma I wonder if the government realises or cares that the current hospital crisis will become catastrophic when the HCWs that are left (already down 30-40%) need to be off work to look after their barely vaccinated COVID+be primary school aged kids? Let alone recover themselves..

If the government wants kids back at school from Day 1, as CMO & PM have noted, why has extensive modelling not been undertaken to assess the spread connected with school returning? What possible explanation is there for not looking at this? Why no proactive planning?

Very important point about rapid tests - must do throat & nasal swabs (even if it’s not on the instructions to do so). Doing a nasal swab only is much more likely to give a false negative result (ie the person actually has Covid but the test result is negative). #COVID19
Kit Yates@Kit_Yates_Maths

My son (6) is positive for covid. So we decided to do a little experiment. On the left is a flowflex lateral flow test with just a nasal swab (as advised) - negative. On the right is a flowflex lateral flow test (same batch) where we swabbed the throat instead - positive.

@Vic_Rollison This warning from Canada which is being totally ignored by Vic, NSW and Morrison. When schools reopen we’re going to get hit with a cataclysmic rise in numbers......and then they’ll have to close schools anyway. 😞
James Heilman, MD 🇺🇦@WikiDocJames

Not sure who needs to hear this, but most of the HCWers at my hospital who have caught COVID got it from their kids who got it from school... Yup school. While we can and do wear N95s at work, it is hard to expect people to wear them at home.

It’s becoming clear that Morrison has caused a lockdown, even if he has staunchly opposed lockdowns since pandemic began. He caused it by failing to give us means to go about our usual lives and jobs - RATs, N95 masks and accurate case figures to show how much virus is out there.
