Nyakinama Sub-county leaders suspends all planned development activities at Bukyere Cave in Bukyere Village, Rwaramba Parish, following disagreements between community leaders and residents over the leasing of the site to a private investor.
The decision was announced during a mediation meeting held in Bukyere Village and attended by sub-county officials, village leaders, elders, and community members.
According to village leaders, a committee had earlier resolved to lease the cave to former Bufumbira North Member of Parliament, Hon. John Kamara Nizeyimana, for a period of 40 years at a cost of four million shillings. The arrangement was intended to facilitate investment and development of the site.
However, the resolution sparked mixed reactions among residents, with some community members claiming ownership of the cave while others maintained that the site belongs to the entire village.
During the meeting, village elders recounted the history of Bukyere Cave, describing it as a community resource that was previously used as a study center by several schools and as a hideout during periods of insecurity. The elders noted that no individual had ever laid claim to ownership of the cave in the past.
