A new version of 𒂗𒈨𒅕𒃸. • Backspacing behaviour is now customized so that character sequences entered as a single sign, e.g., diri 𒋛𒀀, are backspaced atomically. • 𒂗𒈨𒅕𒃸 is now available for macOS. github.com/eggrobin/Enmer…

The Mesopotamian ice trade 🧊🌨️ This letter was sent to our favourite good-for-nothing, Yasmaḫ-Addû, by the vassal king of Carchemish. It shows us that the practice of harvesting ice and exporting it goes back to as early as the 1750s BCE! (1/6)

“Clothes make the awīlum” In Old Babylonian schools, if you didn’t wear the newest Prada™ robes but instead clothes hand-made by your mum, you were considered to be less loved by her. … or so argued this spoiled son of a high official. Here is the letter of Iddin-Sîn to Zinû!

@IrisKamil @lautgesetz This line of the lament for 𒋀𒀕𒆠 reminded me of the rebranding in general and of this tweet in particular: 𒉅𒄷𒄷𒈬𒄷𒈬𒊑𒊑𒀀𒍍𒈬𒂵𒀀𒀭𒅗 #c222.M.282" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">etcsl.orinst.ox.ac.uk/cgi-bin/etcsl.…

@lautgesetz This tweet was in fact inspired by the embarrassing revelation that X is Elon's favourite letter. What a basic choice

Forget your favourite Latin alphabet letter. What's your favourite cuneiform sign? Mine is RI.

It must be noted that a cuneiform input method¹ has been available for Mac OS X since 2011. However, it uses an old version of what is now the OGSL, and has some limitations: ASCII fallbacks, confusing candidate numbering, etc.; see its README. These are solved in 𒂗𒈨𒅕𒃸.

today I got lucky and saw something rare: the hand-operated antique drawbridge was opened so an antique boat could leave the special dock reserved for museum piece boats

One of my favourite features in Akkadian is that sometimes(!) the adverbial marker -iš can be used like the English -ish. abru "brushwood pile" -> abriš "like a brushwood pile", or in other words: brushwood pileish 😁

@IrisKamil It pops up in Early Dynastic IIIb texts (thanks ePSD2!), and by this point Akkadian personal names are well attested in Mesopotamia

Multiple Semitic words for 'chair', such as the Hebr. כיסא /kiˈse/, Aram. כסא /kiˈse/, Ugaritic 𐎋𐎒𐎜 /kussīʾu/ & supposedly also Arab. كرسي /kur.sijː/ all derive from Akkadian 𒄖𒍝 kussû. The Akkadian word itself is a loan from Sumerian 𒄑𒄖𒍝 (giš.)GU. ZA "(wooden) throne"!

@AANDeloucas @cwjones89 I suspect part of the mastodon flop may have been people failing to find each other: for instance of the 7 assyriologists I follow there, it appears that you follow two. I’m not sure how that could be facilitated, regardless of the platform.

@lautgesetz @IrisKamil Switching from 𒄷 to 𒊑 would have made sense in multiple ways… Instead we get an illegible sign.
