@SlLENTPRINCESS this temp in london is like 5x worse. infra is built different here
athens is fairly dry and its fine until you hit 40+
but most places in southern europe have aircon tho
English

as a brazilian i used to think europeans were being silly and dramatic, until i got to athens this week
holy fucking shit i'm not built for this

if u don’t hear from your british oomfs during the next couple days it’s because we’re all dead from the heat

@strat0manc3r @justalexoki there's structural understanding and there's mechanical understanding. you're only counting one.
English

@eigenboy_ @justalexoki This is a shallow take. Plenty of lead engineers and architects in the pre-ai world who did little hands on work but who are undeniably experts in their app.
English

if you're still writing code you're unironically falling behind
@levelsio@levelsio
I don't write code anymore I haven't written code in I think 6 months? I think everyone is like this no?
English

@basedjensen yeah im sure dario really worries about spooking people
English

I don't think its about protecting math jobs. Discovery isn't understanding. Flooding the field with ai theorems nobody gets isn't a mathematical golden age. More like an oracle dump. Math isn't just proving stuff. It's knowing what matters, how it fits, what it tells us about the world. This pretty much applies word for word to most things about ai + . Its a win-win overall but mathematicians probably become more important.

@elliotarledge true but rl + skills > rl
+ skills are distributed which gets people involved (underrated imo)

@basedjensen post-tesla karpathy seems more like a tinkerer-educator with broad interests rather than someone chasing breakthroughs or running a company/lab. very different from Ilya for example
he seems to be optimizing for "what's interesting to me right now"
English

@bernhardsson yeah stay at home parents are definitely not phone addicted lmao
English

My optimistic take on this is that evolution will take care of this. There’s a bunch of genes that cause phone addiction (very simplified) and those genes are basically going to go to zero in the next 50 years.
Paul Graham@paulg
If Steve Jobs were still alive, he would have the moral authority to face and maybe even to solve this problem. But I doubt anyone in the phone business now does.

@HotForMoot riley single handedly keeping yaz in business and not a single guy she likes needs her to

@Jaffer22915438 The Roman army rule: action removes fear.

@home_work_biz @paulg Stockholm felt safe to me too. So does most of London even as a resident. But felt safety is anecdotal, not an argument. The OP was based on vibes, so citing stats was fair and more honest than the "vibe" it's pushing back on. I think we mostly agree.
English

While the statistics regarding gang-related violence in Stockholm are indeed serious and have reached levels comparable to much larger cities, the context of where and why this happens is crucial.
The vast majority of these incidents are targeted attacks within specific criminal networks. For the average person, Stockholm remains one of the safest cities in the world to walk in. These shootings and bombings don't happen randomly in public squares or crowded tourist areas; they almost exclusively occur at specific private addresses or isolated spots linked to the conflict.
The idea that walking down the street is 'exciting' or dangerous is a misunderstanding of the situation. It’s a tragic internal conflict among gangs, but it hasn't turned the city's public life into a war zone for the general public.
