This is insane. What we are witnessing is a global structure of obsessive and hallucinatory fixation on Israel that is pathological. The notion that governments and institutions across the world are expected to issue condemnations over an Israeli minister mocking activists who deliberately crossed into another country in order to stage and film their own arrest reflects a distortion of attention and a complete failure of basic moral reasoning. I will not pretend that this is normal, nor that it constitutes a "serious" instance of criminality demanding widespread condemnation.

New Zealand condemns the behaviour of Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Last year, New Zealand placed a travel ban on Minister Ben-Gvir for severely and deliberately undermining peace and security and removing prospects for a two state solution. His latest conduct with respect to the Gaza flotilla, which has been seriously criticised by his own Prime Minister, is further vindication of that position. We expect Israel to adhere to its international legal obligations, including in its treatment of New Zealanders participating in the flotilla. We have instructed MFAT to call in the Israeli Ambassador today to directly pass on our grave concerns. -WP

At my direction, Global Affairs officials summoned Israel’s ambassador regarding the treatment of Canadian citizens on board the flotilla. I can confirm that all Canadians who were on board are safe and are in the process of being transferred to Türkiye. Consular officials will be present to meet and support Canadians upon their arrival in Istanbul. Officials at our Embassy in Tel Aviv have been engaged throughout and remain on standby to provide immediate assistance. Canada expects full respect for the rights and safety of all civilians.

The abominable treatment of civilians aboard the flotilla, including that which is documented in footage shared by Itamar Ben-Gvir, is unacceptable. Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has directed officials to summon the Israeli ambassador to demand assurances regarding the safety and security of Canadians involved. Canada has already imposed strict sanctions on Mr. Ben-Gvir, including asset freezes and a travel ban, in response to his repeated incitement of violence. The protection of civilians and respect for human dignity must be upheld everywhere, at all times.

Ben-Gvir is a dangerous provocateur who represents an extreme minority. He is fundamentally and entirely not Israel, and he does not represent its values or the rule of law.
Netanyahu’s irresponsible decision to bring him into the government and place him at the head of a ministry has cost Israel human lives and damaged Israel's relationships around the world.
With elections approaching, we will do everything to replace the entire government and rebuild a liberal, democratic Israel.

Performative activism, meet performative justice.
Ben Gvir just handed the flotilla exactly what they came for. A clip of a cruel Israeli minister to wave around.
It doesn’t matter that they broke a naval blockade after repeated warnings. It doesn’t matter that Israel offered to deliver the symbolic “aid” on board to Gazans itself.
The IDF did incredible job to stop them without provocations and arrange for their departure. But then Ben Gvir came along, the guy who didn’t serve a day in the army.
Most people will only see this clip of a minister delighting in use of force and humiliation on camera.
Ben Gvir and the flotilla deserve each other. Both perform justice. Both peddle hate.
But neither Israelis nor Palestinians deserve either.

My wife Toby and I are in @Israel becoming citizens. At the Interior Ministry, the official reviewing our papers - a Jew who came from Ethiopia in 1991 - asked me for proof that I was Jewish.
I showed him letters from our rabbi. As I did so, tears began to flow.
I told him: “I remember the 1970s and ’80s, when we marched and protested so Ethiopian Jews could come home to Israel. Back then, many questioned whether Ethiopian Jews were Jewish at all. We insisted our Black brothers and sisters were as Jewish as any of us.”
And now, 35 years later, here was a holy Ethiopian Jew confirming my Judaism.
We had come full circle.
Holding his hand, I sang: “Zeh hayom asah Hashem, nagilah ve’nismechah bo” - This is the day God has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Jews from East and West have returned home together.
Am Yisrael chai v’yichyeh.
