i was married to a US Citizen long before the tourist visa expired. No gaps. Not a day illegal ever. Didn't work for money until i had the tempirary greencard that permitted it. Nothing to do with feelings; has to do with marital status change, and following the rules as they were spelled out in the mid 1990s.

An alien who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply. This policy allows our immigration system to function as the law intended instead of incentivizing loopholes. The era of abusing our nation’s immigration system is over.
