Curaçao bloeit en groeit. Bij aankomst hartelijk welkom geheten door premier Gilmar Pisas op alweer mijn laatste bestemming van deze reis; het mooie Curaçao! In mijn gesprek met premier Pisas, en ook met de voorzitter van de Staten, de leden van het parlement en de ministerraad, kwamen tal van actuele onderwerpen voorbij. Het ging onder andere over alle geopolitieke spanningen, ook in deze regio, en de gevolgen daarvan voor de kosten van levensonderhoud. Een ander belangrijk onderwerp was de bestuurlijke samenwerking tussen onze landen. In dat kader keken we ook vooruit naar het voornemen om een Koninkrijksconferentie te organiseren, dat als terugkerend overleg moet dienen tussen de vier regeringen als volwaardige partners binnen het Koninkrijk. Hier kunnen relevante ontwikkelingen binnen het Koninkrijk worden besproken en hoe onze landen nog meer kunnen optrekken en zo echt de kansen te benutten om het leven van mensen hier beter te maken.

This is a signal of decline in society. This shouts the take-over of power by non-valeurs. When people are measured by conformance in stead of achievement, a race to the bottom is on its way. Dit vind ik wel een wat uitgebreider antwoord waard. Niemand is objectief. Absolute objectiviteit is onmogelijk. Iemand kan, afhankelijk van het onderwerp, in meerdere of mindere mate een staat van objectiviteit hebben bereikt. Dit is een proces. Naarmate iemands feitelijke kennis betreffende een onderwerp toeneemt, kun je stellen dat het vooroordeel element vermindert en objectiviteit meer kans heeft. Toename van die kennis wordt bereikt via eigen onderzoek, studie of discussie. De persoonlijke emotie bij een onderwerp, of het onderwerp een bedreiging vormt voor het persoonlijke wereldbeeld en doelstellingen of niet, bepaalt de mate waarin aanvullende informatie wordt geaccepteerd en gewaardeerd. Informatiebubbels zijn hierbij belemmerende fenomenen. In zuivere discussies is het doel het verhogen van kennis. Een zuivere discussie vereist bereidheid tot een objectieve instelling en kent geen verliezer. Degene die zijn argumenten heeft moeten prijsgeven profiteert het meest, diens kennis is toegenomen. De ander heeft de bevestiging op de goede weg te zijn. Als in een discussie drogredenaties en achter houden van feiten (narratief bescherming) worden gebruikt, dan is er sprake van onwil om kennis te vermeerderen en waarschijnlijk een agenda.

As a European I say, very good. Our politicians seem to live in a bubble with poor connection to the real world. The moment access to the US bases was denied, I felt like being part of a betrayal. Our societies are based on a common set of values. It's the politics and the almost life long employment of public servants, injected in easy times, reluctant to facilitate change, that makes Europe incapable of reacting to a changing world when that comes knocking on the door. Europe needs learing (pun intended) the hard way.

I've spent weeks debating the new Dutch Box 3 tax reform—privately and online. With the Tweede Kamer approving it on Feb 12, 2026 , it's now hurtling toward the Eerste Kamer. Fundamentally it seems that neither the politicians nor much of the electorate fully understand the implications - "It's not that bad," they say. "Same as before.”. This isn't a tweak—it's a fiscal sledgehammer to the middle class. It prevents wealth-building for everyday citizens, traps families into wage reliance, and locks generations into state dependency. Significantly, no party in the Netherlands campaigned on it in 2025 whilst the existing coalition partners claim to oppose it. If it passes, it sets an EU precedent. Combined with inflation and red tape, it ends private wealth creation. Its the West's Fiscal Rubicon and if we cross it our continent will never be the same. Take the following example: You invest €250/month for 30 years at an average 10% return. On the basis of a total investment of €90,000 the scenario’s on the financial returns are as follows: - No tax on unrealized gains: €520,000 - Current Box 3 system: €410,000 - New Box 3 system (from 2028 onward, based on taxing unrealized gains annually): €287,000 This calculation doesn't yet account for market corrections where higher returns (which often follow) would lead to even higher tax payments under the new system. It also assumes you diligently sells at the right moment each year under the new system. However, when we factor in an average inflation of 2.5%, this results in the following real purchasing power against the aforementioned investment of €90,000: - No tax: €248,000 (lost purchasing power: €272,000). - Current system: €196,000 (lost purchasing power: €215,000) - New system: €137,000 (lost purchasing power: €150,000) The implications are dire. The new Box 3 law plus inflation will effectively mean zero net growth in which no private individual will ever again have the opportunity to grow wealth. Your "investments" barely beat a savings account and barely outpace inflation. In an AI-driven, globalized world this weakens us and creates further reliance on thstate. Nog even over die taks op ongerealiseerde winsten: begrijp ik het nu goed dat als je beleggingen in jaar 1 & 2 bijv. 20% stijgen en in jaar 3 & 4 weer dalen tot het oude niveau en je dus GEEN vermogenswinst hebt dat je dan toch over die tijdelijke 20% stijging belasting betaalt?
