@daisychristo Biology O-level question 1967: 'Explain the passage of food troughh the gut.' That was it. You wrote an essay listing mouth, teeth swallowing etc. GCSE biology question 2005: a diagram of the gut, arrows to three parts, three words given - put them in the right place.

We have a lot of historical records of exam papers like this. Frustratingly, we have far fewer records of what the students actually wrote in response! Maybe their responses were all brilliant. Maybe some of them were terrible. My colleagues wrote a paper on standards in A-level maths over time, and finding archive responses was really hard! Eventually they were able to compare responses from 1964, 1968, 1996 and 2012. Standards had declined dramatically between 1968 & 1996. The quality of work that would have got an E in 1968 got a B in 1996. substack.nomoremarking.com/p/are-exams-ge…

@JohnDavisJDLLM I suggest the starting point is the shift in paradigm from the traditional Anglo-Saxon 'responsible individual' to the collectivist paradigm which underpins Marxism, Nazism, woke ideology, radical feminism etc. 'Women hating men' is a natural result.

@karenvaites Statements like this are a) an insult to those of us who struggle with reading and, however hard we try, can never enjoy the process. b) assumes that reading a lot of books is necessarily beneficial. I have met so many adults who enjoy novels, but who know almost nothing.

Students should read 25 books or book-equivalents each year. In every elementary grade. Looking back at the standards my Mom worked from in the 2000’s, I’d say we lost something.

WONDERFUL NEWS! The government and Bridget Phillipson are doing something right! Well done to them! Woohoo! 🥳 This will make the hard job of headship much easier for countless heads. The law will back what all good schools have been fighting for. 👏

@GBNEWS There are UK schools that have closed the attainment gap for their boys. Here's what some of them did. None of it is about masculinity or misogyny. Let's follow the evidence. equi-law.uk/guidance-for-s…

@rastokke I'm always suspicious when someone claims they know what a term 'really' means. It often indicates a particular view which they intend to foist on us without a persuasive argument. Lets be descriptive: "We want all children to receive appropriate support to achieve their best."

Aiming for the same results for all students often results in lower standards across the board. So what does equity mean? My guest defines equity as minimizing the impact of disadvantage (e.g., socioeconomic status) while maintaining high expectations. youtube.com/shorts/BYgLn2l…

@minds_eminent What stupidity. For 1000s of years, in 100s of different cultures, marriages have survived and done well without all these 'requirements'. Sure, some of these are a good idea, but if a man has all these tick-boxes and the woman has a list herself, then none will ever marry.

Men if you want your marriage to work: - You must be older than your wife - You must be more educated than your wife - You must be richer than your wife - You must be bigger and stronger than your wife. - You must be more exposed than your wife - You must be more emotionally intelligent - You must be a good leader Anything less than this is doomed to fail.

the weirdest thing about parenting in 2026 is that you can spend hours researching the safest car seat, the best pediatrician, the right sunscreen. then hand your kid an iPad with apps that have never been tested for whether they actually teach anything. we are incredibly careful about physical safety and incredibly careless about what goes into their minds.

I much prefer @DTWillingham's, “thinking well requires knowing facts.” to the imprecise "you can’t think critically without knowledge." One notes how facts improve thinking; the other is technically untrue & omits the quality of thinking I think we should prioritize in teaching.

The depression among young women, the rage among young men because they can’t find each other is primarily driven by this. The online dating experiment failed. Yes there’s some happy couples out there. But at scale, it has left young men and women, isolated, insecure, and resentful. Time to acknowledge it and get back to better, time-honored ways of meeting each other.

@LisaBritton We found a number of UK schools that had closed the gap for their boys and had the data to prove it. My book 'Yes he can' is being published by Routledge this summer. There is a summary of what they did here. equi-law.uk/guidance-for-s…

Boys are behind girls in education. We often hear “Boys need more recess!” or “We need all-boys schools!” but experts don’t know if these things will actually help because there isn’t enough research to support it. We need more research that actually measures boys separately so that we can effectively address the challenges facing boys and young men.

@benonwine No. The school should operate a behaviour policy which results in good behaviour. It's not 'strict', it's a code, understood by everyone and which every teacher puts into practice. The really important part: the teacher knows that they will be supported by SLT .
