Delighted that Ben Dallyn from @RUHBath won the 1st prize for oral presentation @dasairway He presented A MANIKIN STUDY OF STYLETS & BOUGIES (static & dynamic). The key findings -STYLETS BEST -STATIC BOUGIES WORST (by a distance) -dynamic bougies closer to stylet than bougie -when the chips were down (a genuinely difficult intubation) the differences in performance increased & static bougie failed often -findings same for FPS, time to intubation, ease, success w/in 120s This is in contrast to recent studies & therefore notable. While some may dismiss a manikin study -we used a trucorp difficult airway manikin which facilitated a consistent & truly tricky airway (Grade 2b with D-blade) -achieving this would be impractical in a clinical study, so here I hope a manikin adds something a clinical study cannot -HAVL intubation is really an issue of physics so I hope the data are (largely) transferable….

Last week I demitted from the role of Director of National Audit Projects at the @RCoANews It’s been a huge honour & privilege to be involved in these projects for the last 18 yrs. I’ve learnt a vast amount from an enormous number of people. Project leads & panels have been amazing. Mostly it’s been humbling to see how NHS anaesthetists have engaged with the projects pro bono to enable robust national data to be collected for the betterment of patient safety during anaesthesia. The clinical lead for NAP8 -a rerun of NAP3 plus regional blocks- will be appointed tomorrow. Good luck to you!
