Dr. Bill Hardgrave is an internationally recognized expert in radio frequency identification (RFID) technology who has progressed through the ranks of academia to become the president of the University of Memphis.
But he’s still the same person who grew up seven miles from the nearest paved road in rural Johnson County and arrived at Arkansas Tech University seeking access to a better life through higher education.
“I didn’t know it at the time, but looking back it was probably the most transformational time of my life,” said Hardgrave when asked about his experience as an undergraduate student at ATU. “For somebody who didn’t know anything about college, the experience I had here and the education I received here set the foundation for everything else I’ve accomplished. I don’t know where I would be or what I would have done without this foundation, both from the education side and the experience.”
Hardgrave received the highest honor his alma mater may bestow upon an individual when he was inducted into the ATU Hall of Distinction under the Distinguished Alumnus category during spring 2026 commencement at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville.

Jerry Charles Young IV has been selected and is taking office as Arkansas Tech University campus ambassador as of Monday, May 4.
A native Arkansan born in Dardanelle on Feb. 20, Jerry IV is the continuation of an Arkansas Tech tradition that dates back to the 1930s. ATU Student Government Association cast a unanimous vote on Oct. 23, 2013, to restore the tradition following a 76-year absence and install Jerry the Bulldog as ATU campus ambassador.

Meet the 'next Einstein' who turned down a $1.1 million university offer to lead a groundbreaking quest to decode the mysteries of the universe.
Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski is redefining the image of a modern genius, possessing a brilliant mind that has earned her frequent comparisons to Albert Einstein. Her extraordinary journey began at just 12 years old when she built her own airplane, a feat that foreshadowed a stellar academic career. After graduating at the top of her physics class at MIT with a perfect GPA, she moved on to Harvard for her doctoral studies. Her groundbreaking research on the 'spin memory effect' even caught the attention of the late Stephen Hawking, who cited her work in his own papers. This meteoric rise made her one of the most sought-after scientists in the world, leading her to famously decline a $1.1 million offer from Brown University to pursue her specific intellectual passions.
Today, Pasterski leads the Celestial Holography Initiative at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Her work sits at the absolute frontier of science, focusing on an ambitious project to encode the universe as a hologram in an effort to reconcile the long-standing divide between spacetime and quantum theory. Unlike her historical predecessors, she leverages modern digital platforms to share her research and journey with a global audience, proving that the next generation of genius is as much about communication as it is about calculation. By standing on the shoulders of giants while solving mysteries that have stumped generations, Pasterski is proving that the future of physics is being written by those bold enough to forge their own path.

"Arkansas is experiencing a boom in data center construction."
See AVAIO's $6 billion (potentially up to $21 billion) AI-ready data center near Little Rock, and a $4 billion Google project in West Memphis.
#Arkansas needs water and affordability, not data centers.
Harrison H. Smith ✞@HarrisonHSmith
Can someone tell me how a data center will improve the lives of Americans? Explain to me the benefits that we will receive worth trillions of dollars, billions of gallons of fresh water, millions of acres of farm land, and more energy than our biggest cities. Someone explain.
