(🧵1/11) For the past year and a half, I've been investigating OpenAI and Sam Altman for @NewYorker. With my coauthor @andrewmarantz, I reviewed never-before-disclosed internal memos, obtained 200+ pages of documents related to a close colleague, including extensive private notes, and interviewed more than 100 people.
OpenAI was founded on the premise that A.I. could be the most dangerous invention in human history—and that its C.E.O. would need to be a person of uncommon integrity. We lay out the most detailed account yet of why Altman was ousted out by board members and executives who came to believe he lacked that integrity, and ask: were they right to allege that he couldn't be trusted?
A thread on some of of our findings:

My dad worked on this project in the 80s. A truly massive, city-sized complex responsible for a huge chunk of the world's petroleum-derived products (plastics, polymers, fertilizer).
If it's been taken out, a lot of global industrial production will seize up.

Trump's budget request shows an 866% increase in costs for White House repairs and renovations, going from $39 million to $377 million.
That apparently includes the private donations to Trump's White House ballroom, which raise corruption concerns. politico.com/news/2026/04/0…

South Korea transferred 500,000 rounds of 155mm artillery ammunition to the U.S. in 2023 to replenish stocks depleted by security assistance to Ukraine. Poland, a critical frontline state, relies heavily on Korean hardware for its military procurement: look up where the chassis in the Krab self-propelled howitzer — another ornament of Ukrainian security assistance— comes from. Seoul has done quite a lot.

Trump: "You know who else didn't help us? South Korea didn't help us. We've got 45,000 soldiers in South Korea to protect them from Kim Jong Un, who I get along with very well. He said very nice things about me. He used to call Joe Biden a mentally retarded person."

Reporter: Deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure violate the Geneva conventions and international law.
Trump: Who are you with?
Reporter: I'm with the New York Times
Trump: Failing New York Times. Circulation is way down.
Reporter: Are you concerned that your threat to bomb power plants and bridges amount to war crimes?
Trump: No, not at all. These are disturbed people. Quiet. You no longer have credibility. You’re fake.

Canadian Lauren Chen and her husband, who were recently allowed back into the United States by the Trump Administration after fleeing to Canada following their involvement in a Russian-backed intelligence operation which provided millions of dollars to Chen in order to spread Russian propaganda to American Conservatives via her now-defunct Tenet Media, was invited to today’s event celebrating Easter at the White House.
