The Bell is the first locomotive in our America’s 250 series to roll out of Juniata! 🚂🔔🇺🇸 1776 isn’t just a number. It’s the beginning of America’s story. This engine pays tribute to the Liberty Bell, one of our nation’s most enduring symbols of independence. Did you know our predecessor, the Pennsylvania Railroad, played a pivotal role in transporting the Liberty Bell across the country? This allowed millions to experience a piece of history firsthand. Now, that legacy is returning to the rails. 🔗 Learn more about our commemorative series, all six units, and more: bit.ly/4nCutU6

The experts here at @unmc and @NebraskaMed said yesterday that they would be ready to help with Ebola patients -- as they did in 2014 -- once they finish caring for 18 Americans exposed to hantavirus on the MV Hondius cruise ship. None of them have symptoms yet.

This news is so impactful to the @famofflight5342 and all who lost loved ones on January 29th 2025. It was heart wrenching to think that the plane that was involved in our accident might not integrate the lifesaving technology we have been pushing for. Thank you @MHI_RJ.

On this day in 2011 – 15 years ago – the deadliest tornado since 1947 leveled a large swath of Joplin, Missouri. 158 people were killed by the mile-wide EF5 tornado. The disaster was the product of a worst-case scenario on multiple fronts: a high-end meteorological setup on a graduation Sunday in May coupled with cascading failures/lapses at multiple levels. Though the Storm Prediction Center had included Joplin in a red zone "moderate risk" (the second highest category) AND warned of possible "strong tornadoes," local warnings were handled differently. No tornado emergency was ever issued by the National Weather Service in Springfield, Missouri. The Joplin area had been under numerous false-alarm tornado warnings in the years prior, which peer-reviewed research asserts contributed to public complacency. Moreover, frequent siren tests/activations by emergency management lead to "siren fatigue." Moreover, the Joplin area was under multiple simultaneous conflicting tornado warning polygons for different cells, leading the public to believe the tornado threat was passing north of town. That also lead to confusing siren activation during the event. Ultimately, about 25% of Joplin was destroyed. The St. John's Regional Medical Center sustained EF5 damage, and had to be torn down due to deformation of its foundation. (It was moved as much as 4 inches.) 3,734 buildings (3,181 homes and 553 businesses/municipal buildings) were destroyed. In all, the episode showed that – despite technological advancements – expanding population centers are increasingly vulnerable to rare, high-end tornadoes.

It’s deeply troubling that emerging technology can be used to extract CVR audio from visualized data we share to help the public understand the circumstances of an accident. Laws against releasing CVR audio exist to protect privacy, preserve the integrity of NTSB investigations, and out of respect for accident victims and their families during a time of tremendous loss.   NTSB is taking steps to address this issue. The public docket is offline for now, and we are urging X, Reddit, and others to take such disgusting, manipulated posts down. ⬇️

NTSB Newsroom@NTSB_Newsroom·
The NTSB is aware that advances in image recognition and computational methods have enabled individuals to reconstruct approximations of cockpit voice recorder audio from sound spectrum imagery released as part of NTSB investigations, including the ongoing investigation of the crash last year of UPS flight 2976 in Louisville, Kentucky. The NTSB does not release cockpit audio recordings. Federal law prohibits such public release due to the highly sensitive nature of verbal communications inside the cockpit. The NTSB takes these privacy restrictions seriously. The NTSB docket system is temporarily unavailable as we examine the scope of the issue and evaluate solutions. We hope to restore access to the docket system as soon as possible.

LaGuardia Airport
LaGuardia Airport@LGAairport·
LaGuardia’s Runway 4/22 remains closed as emergency construction and engineering crews complete necessary repairs and proactive inspections of the airfield as quickly and safely as possible. We fully expect to be able to reopen the runway before flight operations tomorrow, although pending the results of continued inspections and repairs an earlier reopening is possible. LGA remains open to flight operations but we expect delays throughout the day, so travelers should check with their airline for flight status before arriving at the airport.
