Got a fully funded PhD in the US and my Invitation to Apply for Canadian PR around the same time. I chose Canada. Came here in 2022, got my citizenship this year, helped my siblings and their families get here through the Alberta Nomination Program in 2023. Best decision ever.

People ask me why Canada 🇨🇦 and not the US 🇺🇸 when I was planning my japa. I applied from Lagos 🇳🇬. Never been here before I landed. Here’s what I saw: The PR 🇨🇦 process is transparent. You know your score, your rank, your shot. Once you have PR, citizenship takes 3 years. Not decades. Healthcare doesn’t come with a bill. Canada’s 2026 immigration target: 380,000 new permanent residents. They are actively building toward you. Today the US told people living there legally for years to go back home and reapply. E be like ‘technical deportation’ for my eye 🤲🏾 I applied from Lagos and never once felt like I was begging. Nigerians abroad, what made you choose the country you ended up in?

@gbemiclassic1 @realannclaret This was actually my situation when I was leaving the UK. A big part of my decision came from knowing my husband would have to pause work while I studied, and I couldn’t bring myself to derail his career like that.
That was one of the major reasons I chose Canada instead.
