Yesterday I had a scheduled business meeting with an @FNBSA banking executive.
I was 20 minutes late because I got lost in the maze of Johannesburg fancy buildings.
When I walked into the boardroom, there were 5 banking officials waiting to see how they could assist me with my banking needs.
The banking executive was supported by a team of specialists from the Forex and Wealth Management departments and a Private Advisor who handles high profile media personalities to answer all the questions that I had and assist me open an account.
It reminded me why things still work in South Africa, and why millions of Zimbabweans bank in South Africa, including the authors of our economic tragedy.
Almost every senior ZANUPF leader banks in South Africa because they don’t trust the Zimbabwean banking system that they preside over.
They use the local banking system to loot public funds but they move the money to South Africa and beyond.
What amazed me about the @FNBSA team was the fact that they even had done their homework on my background, they even knew how long I had stayed in prison for exposing corruption and practising journalism in Zimbabwe.
We all found humour in the historical stories of my work as a journalist, more importantly it showed me how serious and professional they are.
The banking executive and his team were well-prepared and attentive to my banking needs because they understood that my banking would bring money that would help the South African economy.
Building trust in the banking system is important for any serious economy, especially for individuals who are bringing money not only into your bank, but your country too.
Zimbabwean political elites need to learn from their South African counterparts
I already bank with two South African banking institutions, but @FNBSA was making a professional statement that they could bank me better by providing a world class service.
This type of customer care is nonexistent in Zimbabwe unless if you are a connected elite.
I am not super rich, but a huge bank like @FNBSA saw it fit to deploy 5 senior bankers to help me, that is how smart banks get rich, they know that every penny counts.
That is why South Africa remains the most sophisticated economy on the continent despite its many problems.
Zimbabwe loses millions of dollars to South African banks and the rest of the world every month simply because the political elites have destroyed the once robust Zimbabwean banking system and killed its credibility.
Zimbabweans now bank money in mattresses and in safety deposit boxes, but the ZANUPF regime gave notice in its 2024 budget when it announced that it will now raid those safety deposit boxes creating panic and fear in the economy.
Zimbabwean elites must understand the importance of trust and customer care in the banking sector regardless of how big or small a client is.
It is deeply unfortunate that Zimbabweans don’t trust the banking system in Zimbabwe anymore leading many of them to seek services elsewhere.
The loss of trust in the local banking system has significant economic implications for the country and its economy, I hope they realise that too.
The tragedy is that the few wine bottles that I will sell around the world will create jobs in South Africa when I bank there instead of Zimbabwe, because it makes no sense for me to bank in Zimbabwe at the moment.
To the banking executive and his team that helped me at @FNBSA yesterday, thank you very much for your professionalism, it left a lasting impression on me, and I will definitely recommend your bank to my fellow compatriots.
These guys were respectful, authentic, true and honest in their professional conduct.
They gave me advice on properties, wealth management, business and investments, and how they are related to my worth based on my current global investments and immediate future pursuits.
Next time the drinks are on me, Daddy Hope Sauvignon Blanc to be specific!

Kofi Annan once said, “More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can master it only if we face it together.”
I hope this speech inspires us to recognize our interconnectedness and see the value in working together, address historical injustices and build a future for the next generation that is hinged on equality, freedom, inclusion and justice!

There is chaos at Warren Park 4 Primary School in Harare, where hundreds of people have been locked out of the polling station. Although voting was supposed to start at 7am, voters have been told ballot papers for the local government elections have not been despatched, hence the delay in voting.

I am saddened to hear that South African rap star @akaworldwide has been shot dead this evening in Durban, South Africa.
AKA spoke out against the repression in Zimbabwe after the arrest of Jacob Ngarivhume & myself in July 2020 & he popularized the #ZimLivesMatter hashtag.
