@NolteNC I watched Pig on a plane a while back, which always diminishes the experience ( but I did like it). I’ll have to watch it again.

Last Night’s Movie…
PIG (2021) B+
Nicolas Cage plays Rob, an aging hermit who lives in the deep Oregon woods without running water or electricity. His only income comes from truffles, which are found by Rob’s only friend, a nameless pig.
Every week Amir (Alex Wolff), a young hotshot with a fancy sports car and glib patter, picks up the truffles and drops off things Rob needs—batteries, canned goods. The two men are not friends. Amir would like to be. Rob is not interested.
Then Rob’s pig is kidnapped, and what you think will become a “John Wick” redux becomes something different entirely.
Reluctantly, Rob is forced to ask Amir for help and the two men search for the pig in the “big city” of Portland. The result is not what you expect. Instead of a man rampaging through the criminal underworld of fine dining in a relentless search for his only friend, we discover who Rob was before he chose hermitage. Then we watch him confront and finally begin to deal with the unspeakable loss that drove him into the woods so many years ago.
When it comes to newer movies these days, my time is much too valuable to watch everything or, honestly, anything. “Pig” is three years old, it got great reviews, people I trust enjoyed it, and the Blu-ray was $5. That’s the only reason I bothered. Over the years, I have found that this winnowing process works. Between my instincts and the above conditions, I score more often than not.
“Pig” is a slow, quiet burn, but unlike “Foxcatcher” (which I reviewed earlier this week), “Pig” does it right.
“Foxcatcher” is a this-happened-then-this-happened-then-this-happened movie. Worse, it’s 137 plodding minutes of this-happened-then-this-happened. “Pig” is every bit as subdued and quiet as “Foxcatcher” but it’s 92 minutes of surprises. After the first act, nothing you expect to happen happens, but in a good way. “Pig” isn’t a movie about revenge, it’s a movie about a man carrying an inconsolable grief and how his dumb search for a pig finally allows him to begin processing this loss and reconnecting with humanity.
Trust me, Rob’s not really searching for a pig.
Small gestures not only loom large (like sharing a piece of bakery), but they stay with you after the credits roll. I’m still processing certain moments.
Cage is beyond superb. Like the larger-than-life stars who came before him (e.g., Burt Lancaster), who sometimes and to great effect buried their explosive personalities into a subdued character (e.g., “The Train,” “Valdez is Coming”), Cage buries his own wild-eye. Rob is a broken man. He shuffles and mumbles. But that explosiveness simmers just beneath the surface.
The Blu-ray comes with a fascinating extra where you watch a professional chef teach Nicolas Cage how to cook. If you want to know what makes Cage such a great actor, watch a few minutes of this Oscar winner trying to connect to a piece of his character (Rob is a former chef) through this humbling process. Cage does this with zero ego. With all these people watching, Cage awkwardly cuts vegetables, stirs mushrooms, and gets more wrong than right while asking question after question.
He’s not just trying to learn how to cook, he wants to know what his character would think while cooking. It’s a rare look at that indefinable thing that separates Great Actors from the rest of us, who too often take their extraordinary work ethic for granted.
