What I remember about Blockbuster is they destroyed local independent video rental businesses. To stay alive, some local shops turned to porn out of desperation - which Blockbuster was ‘too good’ for. This resulted in businesses with anodyne names like ‘Video Central’ having a small normal rental place up front - and then a set of saloon doors that opened onto a warehouse sized room full of smut. In there you had giggling teenage boys shuffling around among zombie looking guys who would rent 8 hours of porn, and show up 8 hours later to rent another 8 hours.
This is what business people refer to as an ‘externality.’ Blockbuster resulted in some externalities.

If Pizza Hut can return, then we can resurrect Blockbuster. And we should. While Netflix made things more “convenient” we lost something irreplaceable: The ritual of going to a place with your family or friends to choose a story together. That experience was special.
