@GergelyOrosz On what basis do you assume this is an AI bot rather than a rules engine bot (which have been around a long time). Business case is the same , only the hype for AI is elevated at the moment.

The most obvious place to already deploy AI/LLMs to save money as a business is customer support. It's happening, everywhere. A new use case at the Dutch postal service: 1. AI bot takes details, drafts a summary 2. Then you... are told to wait. Like, a LOT. A lot lot lot...

Steve Albini was an honest broker who could admit when he was wrong and live according to his values. He was also very funny and made great music. Gone too soon and it feels shocking. RIP.

@GergelyOrosz The wording of the ad is counter-intuitive. Your earn by spending with Grubhub so you can burn with a discount on fuel at Shell. Grubhub pays shell in cash (at a different exchange rate) for that 5c discount.

@GergelyOrosz Why do you say non-traditional? This is two retail businesses participating in standard earn and burn loyalty program. Grubhub is paying by buying loyalty currency to Shell to access their customers.

Fascinating to see non-traditional partnerships in the wild: like a gas station chain Shell partnering with food delivery service GrubHub. I wonder if it’s one where one of the partners pays for the other? If so: who pays? Or do neither pay, just cross-promote one another?

@tim_cook “Used to create” a machine that destroys some of the greatest creative inventions of humanity? A tasteless advertisement. Remind yourself of Steve describing Apple as being at the intersection of technology and the liberal arts. This ain’t it.

@GergelyOrosz We were a .net shop, major brand, worked with Apple dev relations on our first iOS app. 1M+ downloads within weeks of launch. MS paid all dev costs, lots of free Nokia Win phones, fully paid publicity events. Less than 1k downloads until we killed it. No one bought the phones.

Fair that this was another major reason. Building a WP7 app was a massive investment: 1. Hire a C# dev (or learn C#) 2. Write a new app on top of different APIs than iOS or Android had. Reuse 0% of your Objective C or Java code Building 2 native apps already expensive!
johnineson@johnineson

@GergelyOrosz Given the situation with Apple, we'd like to believe this parable, but it wasn't my perception at the time. MS was just unlikely to succeed as a late entrant. And unless you're really big, building another app is damn expensive. So I think most companies said: wait and see.

I remember when Windows Phone launched, the #1 complaint was how it lacked apps. Major brands that built an iPhone and Android app wouldn’t build for the most valuable company on the planet at the time. I now wonder how many did it because they didn’t trust Microsoft back then.

@_ClaireConnelly Can confirm. Banking apps only allow you to transfer money between your own accounts at that bank. To send money to other you give all your personal and banking details to a third party who pretty much front your payment, or you send a cheque (check).

@adamliaw The photos on the website are extremely confusing. The bowl pages have photos of a stack of bowl with what appears to be a consommé bowl facing forward. Plates are depicted as lids for bowls. Probably good but wouldn’t buy because the photos sow doubt.

@shreyas @GergelyOrosz Agree with the value to users but the handwringing over the technical difficulties is hollow. The cost (in storage ) is clearly high, would have been hard to argue for. That announcement blog post - contrived, trite.
