Wildfire risks are already heightened this year, so a very timely blog from @Gameandwilde's Henrietta Appleton on the muddled approach being taken by Defra. We need all the tools in the box – cutting, grazing, prescribed burning, restoration & education gwct.org.uk/blogs/news/202…

FOREST OF BOWLAND CONSULTATION: YOUR VOICE MATTERS 📢🏔️ The deadline is approaching. The consultation on the Forest of Bowland National Landscape Management Plan (2026–2031) closes on 2nd March. The Moorland Association has published its draft response to help you shape your submission. Why You Must Act These plans are non-statutory but highly influential. They shape funding, planning decisions, and the narrative around upland management for the next 5 years. ⚠️ Key Areas of Concern: Active Management: The plan must recognize that the landscape's character relies on grazing, predator control, and skilled stewardship - not abandonment. Wildfire Risk: Climate resilience is impossible without addressing fuel loads. Financial Reality: Ambition must be matched by realistic funding pathways. Legal Robustness: We must prevent "regulatory creep" in non-statutory documents. Whether you live in Bowland or manage land elsewhere, these precedents affect us all. 👉 Action: Review the draft on our website and submit your feedback before March 2nd.

⏰ THE CLOCK IS TICKING FOR THE NORTH PENNINES. By February 10th, a strategic blueprint will be signed off that dictates the next five years of our uplands - and the current draft is a dangerous shift toward passive "rewilding." The North Pennines National Landscape (AONB) Management Plan (2026–2031) risks sidelining the very people who keep these moors thriving. We are calling on everyone who lives, works, or cares for this landscape to respond now. OUR CORE CONCERNS: WILDFIRE RISK: The draft seeks to end prescribed burning on peat. This is a recipe for disaster. Without fuel load management, we face high-intensity wildfires that ignite the peat itself, destroying carbon stores and habitat for decades. WADING BIRDS: Iconic species like Curlew and Lapwing need more than just wet ground; they need PROTECTION. A plan that ignores lawful predator control by gamekeepers is a plan that accepts the continued crash of these red-listed populations. TREE PLANTING: We support the "right tree in the right place," but planting on open moorland and deep peat dries out soil and creates hiding spots for predators. LIVING HERITAGE: This landscape isn't a museum. Gamekeeping and farming are the economic engines that pay for conservation. DO NOT STAY SILENT. Ensure the final plan reflects the reality of active management, not just theory. Submissions close February 10th.

CLA win: The UK Government has announced a significant change to its planned reforms to APR & BPR, with the valuation threshold rising from £1m to £2.5m – or £5m for married couples. The change comes after intense lobbying from @CLAtweets since the reforms were announced in 2024.

This petition will be presented to the Home Secretary, @ShabanaMahmood , on 30th November 2025. As far as we know a mainstream political party has never initiated a firework petition before.
