📚 Punk is often associated with Western music and fashion, but its political roots (resistance, anti-authoritarianism, DIY culture, and community organising) run deep across the Global South. Global Souths Hub's Mira Mookerjee has compiled, "Punk in the Global South: A Reading and Resource List", a comprehensive collection that explores how punk has shaped activism from Brazil’s transportation protests, to Morocco’s underground scenes, to Indonesia’s feminist and grassroots movements. These resources highlight how punk ideology has intersected with anti-colonialism, struggles for political freedom, and community-led resistance. Thank you to @MatttDavies, Academic Editor, @thirdworldq, Reader @UniofNewcastle & Visiting Professor @pucriooficial, Kevin Dunn, Professor @HWSColleges & @hsaefullah8122, Lecturer @UniNewEngland, who helped put this listicle together with their guidance and recommendations. A powerful essay by ⁦@bartov_omer⁩ on his recent visit to Israel, unashamedly using his research on the German army under the Nazis to frame his understanding of the IDF in Gaza. theguardian.com/world/article/…

Foto: Wendy Boham

Australia's Israel-Palestine policy is now a shambles. @AlboMP & @SenatorWong say they will only recognise Palestine as part of a peace process which doesn't exist, despite it being ALP platform policy. They support a 2-state solution that both Netanyahu and the Knesset explicitly reject. And they have to remain schtum on @IntlCrimCourt and @CIJ_ICJ rulings against Israel while claiming to support international law. They can’t use the “self-defence” argument to justify the slaughter of civilians in Gaza, so they digress to a moral panic about "growing anti-semitism" in Australia. And they cannot say Iran has the right to self-defence against Israeli state terror and assassinations without upsetting Washington, so they peddle a regional anti-escalation argument which Israel regularly violates and undermines. Standing with Israel comes at a very high price they never expected they would have to pay. What a mess!

This is a thread about Yehya Sinwar, Hamas’ new political leader. The picture is from his teens when he was a student at the Islamic University. Six decades before, in 1962, Sinwar was born in the Khan Younis refugee camp in southeastern Gaza.

90% of Palestinian schools in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed by Israel. Over 200 were directly hit. No university left standing. This is the Israeli army detonating a school in Khan Younis today. The scope of mass “evacuations”: total destruction.

This image, this celebration of mass murder of the most atrocious kind, symbolizes a nation that has just completely lost its mind. It is absolutely repulsive to 99% of the planet, and I bet even to most Americans. Rarely in the history of the world has a group of elites so completely lost touch with the most basic moral principles. Witnessing this should terrify anyone with any common sense.

The US will lecture the world about international law and order then greet a genocidal war criminal with ovation and applause. This is US hypocrisy on full display.

3. The Labor government’s treatment of Senator Fatima Payman, Australia’s first hijabi Muslim woman in Parliament, forced her to resign because she dared to oppose a genocide. The Labor party only has space for the abstraction of diverse bodies but no space for the material realities of diversity. We have been given utterly crystal clear evidence that western imperialism will crush anyone who dares to threaten its geo-political alliances & interests. It will use people of colour who tick the intersectionality boxes to use the language of ‘diversity’ to betray you. It will use people who were raised on ‘struggle street’ to bully, intimidate and punish you.

It's been 48 hours since Israel murdered Gaza's water & environment chief engineer along with 4 municipality officials while they were working to restore the water supply to the famine-stricken northern Gaza. Not even a single passing mention of this in any mainstream media!
