@SteveNickSmith Of course! We definitely are, and again, apologies for being yet another rude person on Twitter. I think I just want to hold on to a brief moment of hope before reality sets in again - that was why my reaction was so visceral.

@imogen_goodman I think everyone has the context that Harris isn’t even the nominee yet and much US polling is noise (I thought my substantive point). The crushing burden of being a journalist that we labour under I think allows us to make a few flip remarks on our weekends off though!

To be fair, US polling looks even worse generally than Islington North’s but it ain’t a fairytale bounce so far

@aboutberlin The Aufenthaltsdokument-GB for Brits can only be activited at the Ausländerbehörde, unfortunately! I tried and failed at the Bürgeramt and ended up having to wait for an apt at the LEA.

Question for permanent residents: could you activate the eID feature of your permanent residence card at the Bürgeramt, or only at the Ausländerbehörde?

@imogen_goodman @TheLocalGermany And just like that, here in France the RN (National Front) now threatens the concept of dual-citizenship and the idea that if you are born in France, you are French. Ugh.

Back in 2020, I wrote for @TheLocalGermany about the stress felt by Brits who were unable to take German-UK dual nationality after Brexit. Today, after literally years of reporting on the issue, Germany's dual nationality law has finally come into force. It feels a bit surreal.

@imbresigau They'd need to roughly double their vote share to even form a minority government, since none of the other parties want to work with them, so I think that's very unlikely :) The CDU want to overturn it too but they're very much alone in that, so I'd say it's here to stay.

This definitely won't be the end of us reporting on Germany's dual citizenship law - we're expecting long waiting times and confusion at a lot of the immigration offices - but today definitely feels like a day to celebrate.

Good news! The new citizenship rules kick in today and you can apply for German Citizenship after living here for 3 or 5 years. But as always, Berlin has a surprise for us all if you wanted to send in your application today.
