We're not even going to talk about NVidia. Cook led Apple through a period where every tech company expanded. Yay for him? In the meantime, Apple had the most compelling pre-AI experience in Siri. They had everything! They had mountains of user data, audio and transcription training data, the biggest and most sophisticated user data network in the world *by far*. And they blew it. They should be so far ahead of the competition on AI that it makes their competitors fall into despair. Instead, they are a non-player in the biggest tech revolution since mobile, maybe even since the internet. They could have leveraged their data advantage to create astonishingly powerful models. They make their own silicon, they could have beat NVidia to the punch on hardware if Cook had any foresight. Instead they still just make high-end devices and now also they make TV shows and won an Oscar for a movie no one saw. I'm sorry, but that's underwhelming.

Despite the doomongering from right wing pundits on value of currency last year the opposite has occurred. Gilt prices have fallen; currency strengthened.

The Portuguese league made Darwin Nunez and Viktor Gyokeres look like world-class strikers, made Joao Felix the fifth most expensive transfer in history and caused Ruben Amorim to win 3 league titles in 5 seasons. I think it's time we all agree to never take it seriously again.

In her Budget yesterday, Rachel Reeves announced spending totals averaging £33bn higher than projected in March over the next 4 years. Without these spending rises, she would not have needed to raise taxes at all in her Budget, and public borrowing would have been much lower.

One general and one specific takeaway from this about politics, elections and leaders: Candidates win elections on hope for the future. As such, it has largely been (and likely will remain) true that popularity is maximal once elected and then wanes. It’s true in the UK and many other nations going back 40+ years absent some exogenous event. Kier Starmer, specifically, is performing so horribly that he may go down as the Neville Chamberlain of our era - running a government defined by catastrophic misjudgment on every level. That is quite something.
