People arguing the Iraqi dinar will suddenly return to its old $3+ value are missing one critical thing: The money supply changed. In the 1980s, when the dinar was strong, Iraq only had billions of dinar in circulation. Today there are about 93 TRILLION dinar in circulation. That difference changes everything. Here’s the math people ignore: If 93 trillion dinar were suddenly worth $0.76 each, the total implied value of Iraq’s currency would be: 93,000,000,000,000 × $0.76 ≈ $70 trillion That means Iraq’s currency supply alone would represent $70 trillion in value. For comparison: • U.S. GDP ≈ $28 trillion • Global GDP ≈ $105 trillion So this claim would imply that Iraq’s currency supply alone equals roughly two-thirds of the entire global economy. Yet Iraq’s actual economy is only about GDP $250 billion. This is why economists look at three things when evaluating a currency: 1️⃣ GDP (size of the economy) 2️⃣ Foreign reserves 3️⃣ Money supply Iraq currently has roughly: • $250B GDP • $100–110B in reserves held by the Central Bank of Iraq • 93 trillion dinar in circulation A currency supply valued at $70 trillion would require an economy hundreds of times larger than Iraq’s. So when someone says: "The dinar used to be worth $3.22, so it can go back there." They are ignoring the single most important variable: 💥Money supply. The dinar was strong in the past because there were billions of dinar in circulation not trillions. Math doesn’t lie.
