What are nature markets? They’re financial tools to protect biodiversity. By using credits and well-designed offsets to fund conservation, governments in partnership with businesses invest in preserving nature. pew.org/4dhmLrV

The largest chinstrap penguin colony on Earth is in South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands—and the area recently expanded full marine protections to nearly twice the size of the UK. Now that's something to celebrate! 🐧🎉 #WorldPenguinDay pew.org/3w5Unti

The UK led the world by establishing the @ukgovbluebelt to protect our oceans in 2016, a landmark achievement for the environment and biodiversity. Covering millions of square kilometres, the Blue Belt is the world's largest marine protection network.

Our planet's future depends on the health of our oceans. The @ukgovbluebelt programme is leading the way, with the world's largest marine protected area network. This means more space for ocean species to thrive, free from illegal fishing and detrimental resource extraction.

Now a further 166,000km², an area of water larger than England and Wales combined, will be protected! In 2017, when only 2% of the archipelago had full protection, @LewisPugh swam in these icy waters to urge the UK to fully protect the whole of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI). And in 2018, the UK increased protection to 23%. With yesterday’s announcement, protection has increased again, this time to 36%. SGSSI are one of the world's most precious biodiversity hotspots, and easily the most important wildlife havens under UK jurisdiction. This news is fantastic progress. The hope is that one day all of these waters will be fully protected.

These protections will help safeguard core habitats of marine species such as penguins and seals. It will also create safe migratory pathways to ensure that returning humpback, blue, and fin whales can access krill without threats from fishing vessels. 🐳 pew.org/3Ta2WMn
