Legend has it that war studies Prof David Chandler secured hundreds of these uniforms from Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, keeping them in the basement of the Sandhurst military academy. He would dress up hundreds of officer cadets, marching them about to test his theories on 18thC drill x.com/CinemaTweets1/…

Saving Private Ryan is on again and I have to confess, the first 30 minutes seem more misleading every time I watch it.

By lack of imagination By underestimating the enemy By overestimating their own abilities By failing to learn By expecting young troops to run before they could walk By failing to adapt to the military environment By holding on to old ideas and tactics long after their utility had expired By blaming the troops By sidelining Slim…
The Forgotten War Podcast: Burma Campaign WW2@forgottenwarpod

While General Irwin focused on a slow advance, the Japanese were teaching a hard lesson in jungle warfare. By using the terrain to bypass fixed positions and encircle their enemy, they turned the tide at Indin. How were the British outmanoeuvred? #JungleWarfare #WW2 #Tactics

A great story and journey to be sure. But you talk about Dunblane -- 'a tiny rainy town in Scotland' -- as if it's Easterhouse in Glasgow or Pilton in Edinburgh. Dunblane is like Trumpton. It's a Scottish middle class utopia, where even the dugs in the street have hyphenated names. 😅😅🤣🤣🤣
Scott Barclay@BarclayCard18

It is genuinely incredible that two brothers from a tiny rainy town in Scotland were able to both make it to world number 1 at the same time at professional tennis. The stuff of fairytales and magic. ✨ The Murray brothers are both retired now but what an unreal journey it was.

Vernacular translations of the Bible printed before the Reformation. 1466: German, before Luther was even born. No problems with the Catholic Church. 1471: Italian. No problems with the Catholic Church 1487: French. No problems with the Catholic Church. 1488: Czech. No problems If we include ones from before the printing press, my thumbs will fall off from typing it.
Jennifer Greenberg 🕊️@JennMGreenberg

Catholics actually benefited a great deal from the Reformation. For example, you can now read the Bible in English. I think we can all agree, that’s an incredible blessing.

Edinburgh University, the 16th century new kid on the block, was founded by the town council. The real Scottish ancients — St Andrews, Glasgow and Aberdeen — were all established by Papal Bull in the 15th century.
Mark Jackson@MarkJac42819106

@afneil @UofGlasgow And here’s another wee gem, in 1583 when Edinburgh University opened it became the sixth University in what we now call Great Britain. Four of the six were in Scotland. Not bad eh. John Knox’s “school in every parish” strengthened the foundations already laid.

like any other person attached to his Latin I suffer a nasty twich every time somebody uses "decimate" to mean the killing of many rather than the killing of only one tenth (of the dishonored legionnaires). Like anyone attached to his English I am offended by "very unique" ...,
