I just ran into a guy I know in NYC who said he’s doing a temporary gig for OpenAI. According to him, OpenAI is paying hundreds of people and families in New York to install 360-degree cameras throughout their homes that record virtually everything. Vacuuming, washing dishes, cooking, and everything else. He said his job is to go around collecting the memory cards and replacing them with new ones. According to him, OpenAI told workers like him that the recordings are being used to help develop a smart home device. But he said the strange part is that all of the people supervising the project are behavioral psychologists.

@AndrewJamesFilm @medieval_bops In both cases, elites have promoted a radical restructuring of society leading to widespread unemployment. And anyone who resists this is painted as a rube. I could go on, but suffice it to say, the similarities are quite striking.

The people who were skeptical of covid from the beginning are the ones skeptical of the data centers. Maybe listen to them instead of paid influencers and MAGA grifters.

Nearly 50,000 people in the Lake Tahoe area have been told that their utility will stop providing power to them, because it's redirecting that power to data centers. NV Energy, the Nevada utility that has supplied most of Lake Tahoe’s electricity for decades, says that next year it will stop servicing homes in the area, and instead direct that electricity to the growing demand from Nevada data centers. Northern Nevada is one of the fastest-growing data-center corridors in the country. fortune.com/2026/05/12/lak…

Example of the predictably hysterical response from “bluesky left” to Huber’s utterly reasonable “climate politics hasnt been working, so we need something that does work” NYT op-ed. And fwiw I know Huber and was even his TA in grad school—he is coming from a Marxian political economy perspective. But the self-described “socialist movement” in the US hasnt thought in terms of political economy in many years and instead looks at everything in terms of “the racist nazi climate/covid doom and you’re a bootlicker of you have a mildly different perspective”—so this is what Huber is dealing with today.

AOC is right that there are important differences between her and @mtgreenee: 1) AOC emphatically condemns policies only when Trump and the GOP do them, gets muted and deferential when Dems do. By contrast, MTG criticizes policies with equal fervor regardless of which party does them. 2) MTG condemns GOP leaders when they betray their purported values, even risking her political career to do so. By contrast, AOC lies to protect Dems who betray their supposed values (Kamala "is working tirelessly for a ceasefire" in Gaza!), and has supreme devotion to partisan advancement and self-interest above all. 3) MTG introduced a bill to cut all US financing of Israel's military. AOC voted NO, arguing Americans should pay for Israel's "defensive weapons." Big substantive difference. 4) MTG scorns the AIPAC/ADL tactic of accusing Israel critics of being racist and "anti-Semitic." AOC embraces and fortifies that accusatory smear campaign to justify why only liberal critics like her are compassionate and legitimate and everyone else is just racist. 5) MTG only cares about results and outcomes, and will thus work with anyone (left or right) to stop a policy she considers evil and wrong. AOC only cares about posturing and her political branding -- not outcomes -- and will thus reject the opportunity to form majorities to stop stop some policy evil if it means admitting that not only Dems have good ideas and can be good people. AOC is the embodiment of privilege: having no real urgency about stopping things that don't personally affect her (like Israeli wars and US financing of them). That's why she has harsher words for GOP critics of Israel than she does for Dem supporters of Israel. This, and more, is why MTG was pushed out of her own party, while AOC has fully morphed into Nancy Pelosi Jr. and is one of the Democratic Party's most valuable partisan tools, and why she's beloved by Dems as such.
Acyn@Acyn

AOC: I personally do not trust somebody like Marjorie Taylor Greene—a proven bigot and anti-semite—on the issues of what is good for Gazans and Israelis. I don’t think it benefits our movement to align with white nationalists.

It's okay to read "problematic authors". You might find out that they're not as "problematic" as you were told they were. Either way, you won't be infected by their "problematicness" and become "problematic" yourself. It's okay.
Mini Modu@MinModulation

Being afraid of reading "problematic authors" is due to your own insecurity with your beliefs and identity. You think that if you read "bad people", you'll become bad yourself, soaking up their toxins like a dim sponge. This is because you are stupid and can't trust yourself.

@geniuswaitres23 @AlecMacGillis I wouldn’t argue that USAID wasn’t in need of an overhaul, but that’s a far cry from firing everyone. Personally I don’t mind my tax dollars funding some amount of healthcare for needy populations in the name of global stability. I certainly prefer it to a costly war with Iran.

@PollyGHHC @AlecMacGillis There’s been some overlap between USAID and the CIA. However, not every organization receiving money from USAID is a sham charity. I know several nonprofit workers who’ve lost their jobs due to Trump’s budget cuts. They’re not all making 300k. IMO this isn’t a good thing.

@PollyGHHC @AlecMacGillis I’m not interested in cheering on a ‘race to the bottom’ in this country, even when it negatively affects people who see me as an ideological enemy. I don’t think it’s moral to root for unemployment.

The stats here are kind of remarkable. BART's new fare gates have led to a 1,000-hour decline in clean up time; 41% drop in crime; and $10 million increase in projected revenue. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/…

In light of how much leftists these days just love a specific kind of disorder- shoplifting, “blowing up pipelines”, open hard drug use- their Covid era safetyism/embrace of harsh state control measures is so dissonant. It’s amazing how in their minds, all of these actions are undertaken in pursuit of the same goals

What's the big deal when the leader of a nuclear-armed power -- currently blowing up bridges, schools and oil refineries in Iran -- explicitly threatens to impose civilizational annihilation at 8pm ET (prime-time) tonight? Lighten up, guys. It's just Trump having his fun.

Donald Trump has made hyperbolic comments as part of negotiation tactics for a full decade, especially on social media, and yet people still run around like insane people reacting to his posts on here. I truly don’t get it.
