@naomicfisher Love the thoughts & your challenge thrown out to school systems in general. Though need to think of 'system' even more broadly. Schools themselves might be the canaries-in-the-coal-mine of broader society. Children are at school 6 hours a day, those other 18 hours are vital too.

What would happen if we saw school related distress as feedback on the system? As a psychologist, I meet many children who are distressed by school. Usually I’m being asked to change that. Can I make them less anxious? Can I make them attend without protest? 1/

Oh. These community focus group questions hit so deep. How do you self-identify race/ethnicity when asked? Does your response change depending on who is asking and why? Why do you think healthcare settings ask? What do you think they do with this info? Felt them in my whole body

Sometimes we call things "wicked problems", when the only issue is inequitable power relations. Calling them wicked problems de-politicises the causes of the issue and transforms it into a technocratic process, very often reinforcing the status quo.
