@shagbark_hick This post is one I suspect will sit with me for a while. I’ve realised recently that being content with your lot really is as easy as you can conceive. Career propaganda is so pervasive it’s barely spoken about anymore; it’s embedded and flourishing. I shall read this twice.

This changes once you realize that the idea of a "viable career path" as it is commonly understood is obtuse, misleading, and frankly a scam. There are places in America where homes are cheap and a combo of light homesteading, online side income, local work, and a litany of small hustles pieced together can make for a damn fine life. The reality is, the idea of the "viable career path" is a form of social status seeking that has effectively replaced religion in the psychology of most modern folks. It's a damnable lie that those who don't have a "viable career" are doomed to be poor, unmarriageable, lonely, and hopeless. But that lie is important to the forces at play in American society that want you to be a well-behaved tax cow. Buy the $40k house, start making candles to sell online and parting out cars on Ebay, heating with wood, growing cabbage and potatoes, raising chickens, and growing obscure Chinese medicinal herbs to sell by mail. Start guiding flyfishing trips or teach yourself a language at the library and start doing online translating work. Or get a CDL and take monthlong trucking gigs around the US now and then when you need cash. You can figure it out if you want it. You'll make friends, you'll attract good-hearted women who don't want you for your money, and maybe you'll have enough free time to figure out who Christ really is. And your mortgage will be about as much as a parking spot in a big-ten city. If you're stuck in the "viable career" mindset, you'll attract nothing but others who are elbowing their way to a false heaven, and you'll be suffocating under debt with no free time to watch your kids grow up. It ain't the grand path to contentment it's sold to be.
