@davepl1968 Very cool! What was the rendering strategy if some translated text was too tall for the height of the start menu? Crop the text? Reduce font size? Artificially force a minimum height with empty space above menu entries?

If I had a LinkedIn bio, I'd definitely mention that I wrote the Windows Start Menu. Well, the non-resume version is that I wrote the code that custom-paints the Start menu, draws the sideways text, background gradient, and so on. It had been done with a Bitmap in Windows 95, but for WindowsNT that would mean doing it in N languages for V variants of server, workstation, and so on. That would be a lot of bitmaps with text in them. I wanted to render it live. There's probably a way to render text sideways now, but there wasn't at the time. Fortunately, with NT, unlike 9x, you could rotate the device context itself. I'd only been coding for Windows a few months at that point, so it was cool to discover it was even possible. I tried a quick test and it worked! I used standard GDI calls to render the background gradient, which fades blue-black like the sky on the NT box, then fill anything past that with solid black. And now you know how the start menu draws :-)

@matvelloso I’ve two of those kits installed 2 yrs back. Every spring I find some of the heads have gone bad. While I buried long pipe runs and the heads in the front yard, I may never bury the rest due to this (easier to replace above ground).

ALSO - this is a GREAT 2 minute financial primer. It took me about 40 years to learn what this kid knows down cold. That dad has given his kid a great gift of knowledge and wisdom.

This provided a great reminder of my own unconscious bias. I formed an opinion when I saw this guy’s hair and that he allowed his child to not wear a seatbelt. At the end of the video, I have mad respect for him AND his kid (who should be in a seatbelt).

@FrankMcG @browninfosecguy @jsnover @AdamarBE Does any firm cut off access to infra once you cross x hrs/week? Market forces reward companies that reward employees for max output. Unless there’s a net financial downside associated with turning a blind eye to overworking, firms will look the other way.

@koshyjohn @browninfosecguy @jsnover @AdamarBE That’s a management issue then. Again, that’s a statement of the organization and us as a society. Instead of shaming those that don’t keep up or do enough, we should make it a bigger deal when those around us are addicted to work or who’s setting these competitions up.

@browninfosecguy @jsnover @AdamarBE If people are required to do that much work to make an organization run or are required to be around to make an organization run, then you have points of failure. An organization should run as its own entity and not on specific individuals.
