When we talk about the Civil War, it becomes "Igbos have refused to heal and move on". But Yakubu Gowon repeating it every Eke market day is not a refusal to "Move on", right? Ezi.

I’m 33 years old, but whenever I hear some fathers and grandfathers in Igbo land blaming Ojukwu alone for the Biafra War, I begin to question their understanding of history. Before Biafra was declared, thousands of Igbos had already been k!lled in different parts of Nigeria. Ojukwu saw the danger facing the Eastern Region and decided to stand up to protect his people. As the governor of the Eastern Region, he declared Biafra not because he wanted wár, but because he wanted the East to survive and defend itself from further áttacks. Sadly, instead of peace, the situation turned into a c!vil wâr after the Nigerian government moved against the East. Whether people support Ojukwu or not, they should first understand the k!llings and suffering that happened before Biafra was declared.

At Aburi, our objective was singular: to prevent Nigeria from descending into chaos. The agreements reached there were clear, recorded, and witnessed. They affirmed a structure that would allow each region to exercise control over its affairs while preserving a united Nigeria built on mutual respect, not coercion. If Aburi failed, it was not for lack of clarity but for lack of implementation. The federal delegation agreed in Ghana to principles that they later rejected in Lagos. One cannot rewrite the past to shift responsibility. The recordings of that meeting remain, and they speak more plainly than any later recollection. I did not seek secession; I sought justice and safety for my people. It was only when the federal government abandoned the Aburi decisions — the very last hope for peace — that events took the course they did. Let history judge us by what we did, what we agreed to, and what we failed to honor. Nigeria might have been spared great suffering had the spirit of Aburi been upheld..
