Tiltman is, IMHO, Britain’s greatest cryptographer. Sigint career from 1920-1980; pioneering successes against Soviet, Japanese and German ciphers; and the linchpin of the UKUSA special relationship in its formative years. Not to mention his MC at the Third Battle of the Scarpe.

It was one of the worst nights of my life. Explosions almost nonstop. I’m exhausted. But I’m alive. And that already feels like victory against terrorism.

My friend Stephen Bungay died this week. One of Britain’s most syncretic business thinkers, he wrote the best book of all on the Battle of Britain (“Most Dangerous Enemy”) and a very fine survey of Alamein. A great gentleman, a fine writer. Read him if you can. A great loss.

BREAKING: Foreign Secretary @YvetteCooperMP has strongly signalled that the UK will increase defence spending even further, saying “any lingering cosy assumptions about our defence and security are gone. So too is the post-Cold War peace dividend”. She said the UK must "face up to the need to do much more so we properly protect our citizens". Speaking after a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, Ms Cooper said: “We discussed in the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting how Russia’s weakening on the battlefield against Ukraine is also making them more reckless and dangerous. “In the face of that threat and the ongoing global instability, the NATO Alliance is vital and enduring, but within it Europe and the UK must do more. We have already been stepping up with significantly increased defence investment. But we have to face up to the need to do much more so we properly protect our citizens. “Russia is now under huge pressure from Ukraine’s military response and from economic challenges, but that is making them more unpredictable with escalating attacks on Ukrainian civilians, increasing hybrid threats across the continent, and reports of drone incursions. The threat from Russia is increasing on air, land, sea, space, cyber and information warfare. “Any lingering cosy assumptions about our defence and security are gone. So too is the post-Cold War peace dividend. “That’s why we need to keep increasing our defence and security capabilities and maintain our support for Ukraine. NATO is the most successful defensive alliance in history and now we need to keep building a stronger Europe within NATO. The safety, stability and prosperity of our citizens depends upon it.”

Six days ago, I wrote to Nigel Farage with five questions about his secret £5m donation. Since then, he’s had nothing to say. The public deserve answers.

Britain has grown faster than many large European countries since Brexit so reopening the debate is a pointless distraction from the solving the real problems we face
Sky News@SkyNews

Former Tory chancellor Jeremy Hunt says "we can find a way to flourish outside the EU" and that the Brexit debate isn't one we want to have now. His comments come after Wes Streeting said the UK should rejoin the EU. trib.al/Rx0iR33 | @CathyNewman 📺 Sky 501 and YT

@marklubienski @RhonddaBryant The govt has brought in significant new sanctions against Russia, while maintaining existing sanctions. A couple of small areas of the new sanctions will be phased in, rather than taking immediate effect.

@AnthonyGlees Precisely. The benchmark isn’t other G7 countries, but what UK economic potential could be without Brexit.

Instead folk like Brexit Lord Hannan say we’ll get growth with CPTPP (yup, 0.06% added to GDP ‘in the long run’). They actually don’t want growth bc they hate the EU more than they want growth. If the UK can manage slight growth with Brexit, how well we’d do without it.
Anthony Glees @anthonyglees@AnthonyGlees

Brexiters (a) insist Brexit *hasn’t hit the UK economy bc we’re ‘the fastest growing economy in the G7’ but (b) that the UK *is broken bc of low UK econ growth. In 2016 they promised 4-6% growth on Brexit. Today they claim joining the Single Market won’t boost growth. It will.

@FraserNelson Just because UK grew faster does not imply Brexit isn’t an issue. It lowered the UK’s economic potential.

Since 2016, UK growth has outpaced France, Italy, Germany. But big question is ALL of the big European economies outpaced by smaller ones (as well as USA). Dutch doing v well. Poland and Baltics on fire. Maybe Brexit isn't the main issue?

What you see @GoldmanSachs and @NBERpubs basing their analysis on is the fact the 🇬🇧 pre-Brexit was starting to do extremely well, returning after the recession to strong closer to 1990s growth. In 2014 🇬🇧 was the fastest G7 economy and in 2015 it was the second fastest. 🇬🇧 consistent slump to the bottom of the league table is identified as a Brexit effect. Now, I will happily depart Labour orthodoxy and admit I believe many of the the GDP trends Cameron and Osborne were on course for in 2016 were positive — many of course chronicled in @spectator at the time! That’s why I think the OBR, NBER and Goldman Sachs correct to model 🇬🇧 staying a faster grower than 🇫🇷🇩🇪🇮🇹🇨🇦🇯🇵 all which have very serious issues. The 🇬🇧 without Brexit would, I agree with the analysis, consistently have been behind but not matching the 🇺🇸. This ranking would be more or less reflected in the OBR figures of 4% damage I see as the floor.
