I am a bit surprised to see a (growing?) number of New Testament scholars insisting upon pre-70 CE dates for the synoptic gospels. It seems to me, in this regard, that a key distinction is often under-appreciated. The point is not whether an apocalyptic prophet (i.e. Jesus) might have predicted the Roman destruction of Jerusalem ~ 40 years before it happened. It can be shown that this is perfectly historically plausible. Rather, the key question is whether it is historically likely that three separate early Christian writers would produce accounts of their prophetic and messianic protagonist in which the latter's credibility is based not least on the fulfillment of an event (the Roman destruction of Jerusalem) that--from the perspective of these evangelists and their readers/auditors (on a pre-70 CE dating)--still had not happened. And, what is more, these three early Christian authors make this central prediction and its predicted fulfillment *structurally thematic* for their accounts. This point really came home to me in graduate classes with @goodacre some years ago.

@JasminMuj This piece is absurd, and it ignores the fact that the university isn’t just inviting him (bad enough), but honoring him with an award.

“Inviting [Bokassa] does not mean endorsing his views on eating people, it reflects a commitment to open dietary dialogue,” doesn’t quite sound so good, eh? This ridiculous frame only ‘works’ because the presumed audience has no idea what kind of extremist Dodik actually is.

“Inviting [Milorad] Dodik does not mean endorsing his views. Rather, it reflects a commitment to open dialogue and intellectual engagement, even when the speaker is controversial,” @MarkAVargas argues.

I'm very excited that this article is on its way into the world. It represents years of wrestling with the author of Hebrews' relationship to the law. (I'll post again when it's available. Today I'm editing proofs.)

I love being able to celebrate the great work of people I respect and love. These panels were really great examples of charitable engagement, and it gives me hope regarding the ways that our values in academia *might* be trending towards virtue over “victory.”

Biblical scholarship is weird. Sometimes you find complex, dense methodologies in monographs/dissertations/journals sometimes yielding very little insight into the actual text. God, deliver me!

Folks, please stop blindly following Dale Martin and Troels Engberg-Pedersen on ancient metaphysics/ontology. They both slightly but crucially misrepresent elements of Stoicism and don’t get Platonism.

"If we stop producing people who are trained or educated to help undergraduates understand the most important things thought or written or painted in human history,” the renowned philosopher Robert Pippin said, “we might not be able to recover that.” 🎯

The University of Chicago recently announced pauses on admissions to some of its humanities doctoral programs. @Tyler_A_Harper argues that it's “a particular gut-punch to the humanities, not just at the university itself, but nationally and even globally.” theatlantic.com/culture/archiv…
