China has over 50k km of operational high speed rail. It’s almost $1 trillion usd in debt and loosing tens of millions daily, It’s amazing what can be achieved by simply suspending some property laws and manipulating your currency to make essentially any debt level manageable. That’s not to say the UK is doing well, it’s not, but unless you want crushing debt Japan is a far better model than China for rail.
