Now that a few days have passed, I wanted to share my personal opinion on the statements made by Checo Pérez on the Cracks Podcast.
To be honest, I think Checo is right on most of the points he makes, although many of his explanations require some nuance.
It is evident that since 2018, even when Daniel Ricciardo was still part of the team, Red Bull made a clear decision to back Max Verstappen as their sole long-term project in Formula 1. It is no coincidence that Ricciardo decided to leave the team that same year.
Since then, no driver has been able to remain relatively close to Verstappen’s level. And by “relatively close”, I mean a reasonable gap of around 3–5 tenths in pure pace. Instead, over the past few years we have seen completely disproportionate gaps to all his teammates, averaging close to one second per lap.
There is no doubt that Max Verstappen is an exceptional and extraordinary driver, but constant pace differences of one second per lap do not seem representative to me. Clearly, something else was going on, and many drivers have said the same: the car’s development is entirely focused on Max’s needs. And this is not only about the car concept itself, but also about upgrades that should not directly affect driving style, such as weight reduction, which, as Checo confirmed, he only received several Grands Prix later.
Returning to the pace differences, I mentioned that no driver has ever managed to stay within those 3–5 tenths of Max’s pace, except in very specific situations:
Albon in his first races of 2019 and 2020
Pérez at the start of the 2022, 2023 and 2024 seasons
All these cases share a common denominator, something that becomes very clear when analysing recent seasons: the only moment when a Verstappen teammate can be even remotely competitive is before Red Bull introduces its major development upgrades, which usually arrive around the Spanish Grand Prix.
This is exactly what Pérez mentions on the podcast. He claims that in 2022 he was faster than Verstappen until the Spanish GP. Some nuance is required here: it is true that in 2022 and especially in 2023, Checo’s pace was very similar to Max’s (though not clearly superior), and that from Spain onwards the gaps increased significantly. However, they were not as large as one second per lap, but rather around 5–7 tenths.
At the core of the issue, Checo highlights a key point: during the early races, while new upgrades are still being introduced, it is possible to fight Verstappen on equal terms. But once the development focus shifts heavily to the other side of the garage, it becomes almost impossible to remain competitive. This has happened not only to Checo, but also to Albon, Gasly, Tsunoda, Lawson, and I am convinced it could happen to any driver on the grid.
In this sport, these details make all the difference. If you never truly feel comfortable with the car, it is impossible to fight back, no matter how extraordinary your teammate’s results are. In 2023, this issue went largely unnoticed because the Red Bull was so dominant that being half a second behind Max still meant, at worst, a podium. But when those margins shrink, as they have in 2025, being half a second off Max’s pace means going out in Q1 and having no chance of scoring points on Sunday.
In conclusion, I want to make it clear that while I believe, and think it has been proven, that Max can be challenged on equal machinery, that does not mean he can be beaten. Over a 24-race season, far more is required than simply being close on pace. What does seem evident is that Red Bull’s second seat is a poisoned chalice, and as long as the team’s philosophy remains focused exclusively on one driver, true balance over a full season will never be possible, regardless of who occupies that seat.

2 dari 3 WNI/69% masih miskin (World Bank, 2025)
