What were you like in the 90s? From dancing the macarena to using cellphones, the 90s were home to trends and lifechanging inventions – ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) is one of them. RUTF made malnutrition treatment accessible closer to home, helping 9 out of 10 children recover in a matter of weeks. As the civil conflict enters its fourth year, the protracted hunger crisis in Sudan shows little sign of abating. Thank you @JTBC_news for putting a spotlight on children who too often go unseen. 30 years of ready-to-use therapeutic food have revolutionized how UNICEF and partners treat child wasting, while working towards ensuring that no child becomes malnourished in the first place.

Our hearts and thoughts are with Ted Turner’s family and our colleagues at the @UNFoundation. Ted Turner was a champion for children who shared UNICEF’s vision that every child deserves a fair chance in life. His legacy will live on.

The recent attacks in Bamako, Mopti, Gao, Kati and Kidal that started on 25 April 2026 have shown, yet again, that it is children who are paying the highest price of ongoing violence in Mali. Nyawar Biel broke the cycle of malnutrition for her three-year-old son, Wictour, in South Sudan. Displaced from their home by climate-driven floods, Wictour had grown quite weak last year. His mother took him to a UNICEF-supported nutrition programme, where he was treated for severe acute malnutrition and is now recovering. Millions of children in South Sudan are suffering from acute malnutrition, with nearly 700,000 children in danger of its deadliest form. Deepening hunger in South Sudan is pushing 7.8 million people into high levels of acute food insecurity. The crisis is driven by escalating conflict, mass displacement, economic decline, climate shocks and lack of access to healthcare, among other factors.
