I understand nobody wants to close or consolidate their school. But in a rapidly, declining enrollment environment, it makes no fiscal sense to keep under-enrolled schools or low-enrollment schools open despite normal community pushback. It’s tough and it’s hard to make unpopular decisions. I understand that. That’s why superintendents gets paid large sums and golden pensions to make hard decisions. I realize this is an emotionally popular and politically motivated move by Gina for headlines, but it’s illogical and not how the real world or private sector works with chronic deficits. You can’t expect taxpayers to continue to fund under enrolled or low-enrollment schools just because the community wants it. The biggest challenge is that public school districts don’t know how to operate effectively or efficiently in a declining revenue environment. There is no incentive to be fiscally prudent when you have politicians saying ‘keep your spending habits despite revenue declines’. 🤦‍♀️ Yeah, sure no one wants a district takeover but where was she the proceeding four years complaining about the terrible academic results for poor kids? Where was the progressive outrage then? Even now, she talks about governance (or really abt keeping status quo) and not about the academic results for poor kids. “Hinojosa also criticized Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath for what she called a “rigged” A-F report card system, saying Morath gets to "make the [STAAR] test, rate the test, look at results, and then decide who fails and who passes," and added, "And he rigs it to make it show what he wants it to show. And he wants it to show that our Texas public schools aren't strong. And he wants it to show that privatization is a better option." Does anybody ever verify what some public official says is actually true? I’d argued that the state made the test cut scores more favorable in 2022. Statewide third-grade reading proficiency in Texas improved significantly from 2021 to 2022. The percentage of students performing at or above "Meets Grade Level" increased from 44% in 2021 to 47% in 2022. Who would believe kids in third grade performed better after Covid?? That's $7500 in services per person per year... or $625 in services per person per month. Just a few questions that come to mind: What sort of support services justify this cost? How many support specialists are employed here? What are the improvement in outcomes?

The test-blind experiment has backfired. Over 1,100 professors are urging the system to bring back the SAT. Why? Because preparation gaps are so severe that instructors must halt lectures to reteach middle school math. GPAs and AI essays no longer show who is ready for college.

@treadedupon This is so good! You nailed it perfectly! I would add that the weird focus of the superintendent on “our AISD values”, but not sharing what that means, is troubling at best. We should value strong academics first, before anything else.

Sadly, @AustinISD is a train wreck where they can't even maintain a checkbook, teachers are freaking out now that they've caught wind that they will have to do much more with less. This is on the district and leadership, not the staff (which will be hit hardest). Looking at leadership, it's no wonder. Very little "Real World" experience with the Trustees as far as managing large budgets and managing large organizations, but a lot of "activists" and "organizers", a formula that has failed AISD and the city. austinisd.org/board/members

All the kids will be moved to a historically underperforming, D rated school. But according to AISD, they don’t care about “accountability ratings” because mean old TEA is bad.
