A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE HAUSA WORRIORS. This is late 19th–early 20th century northern Nigerian brass helmet and chain-mail cuirass worn by Hausa warriors. African military systems before 1800 Look closer at this masterpiece: A brass helmet crafted in two pieces, with ornamental perforations on the crown and a fixed face guard. Attached chain mail flows down to protect the neck and face only two eye holes staring back like a ghost from the battlefield. Collected from Hadejia, northern Nigeria. The British Museum holds a near-identical piece dated 1903 or earlier. Pure Sahelian engineering. The cuirass? A flowing shirt of riveted iron rings called sulke in Hausa. Often worn over thick quilted cotton armor (lifida) stuffed with kapok and sometimes Quranic verses for spiritual protection. Flexible enough for a cavalry charge, tough enough to turn aside blades and arrows. This wasn't mass-produced junk these were elite pieces, symbols of status and power in the Hausa city-states and Bornu Empire. Picture the full warrior: Hausa or Kanuri horseman in full kit brass helmet gleaming, sulke shimmering, quilted layers underneath, ostrich feathers or colorful tassels flying. Sword or lance in hand, riding a horse often protected by its own padded armor. These were the African knights of the Sahel. Trans-Saharan trade brought influences from North Africa and beyond, but local blacksmiths made it distinctly theirs. Heavy Armour in the Sahel: An Iron Cuirass from Northern Nigeria – HAMA Association By the early 20th century, colonial forces were arriving, but these armors were still in use. ceremonial processions, elite guards, and last stands of tradition. Some sets combined chain mail with heavy iron plate cuirasses (especially in Bornu). Others mixed brass accents for that unmistakable shine. A living blend of Islamic, local, and ancient warrior traditions that Europe rarely saw up close. Why does this hit so hard? Because African military history is often reduced to spears and shields in popular imagination. In reality? Sophisticated armor, cavalry tactics, and blacksmith mastery that rivaled anything in medieval Eurasia. This brass helmet + chain-mail set is proof. A silent testament to empires that rose, fought, and endured under the African sun. Next time someone says "Africa had no armor," show them this. Hausa warriors. Northern Nigeria. Late 19th–early 20th century. #NigerianHistory #HausaWarriors #AfricanArmor #SahelHistory #HiddenHistory

The New York Times has identified the Angelina dashiki as one of thirteen garments that defined the modern fashion record. Named after the iconic song by the Ghanaian highlife band The Sweet Talks, the Vlisco-produced textile bridged West African markets with the civil rights movement to become a global symbol of unified resistance 🔗nytimes.com/interactive/20…
